Ozempic ( Semaglutide ) and diabetic retinopathy (DR)
DR is a microvascular complication of diabetes that can cause visual impairment and blindness. Long term glucose control significantly reduces the development of DR.
Paradoxically, intensive treatment of high glucose and rapid reduction in HBA1c in a short period of time were associated with a temporary worsening of DR in the first 3-36 months. This was noted in Ozempic use as well as other glucose lowering treatments such as Insulin or bariatric surgery.
If you are diabetic, when choosing Semaglutide as an adjuvant treatment for glucose control, it is recommended to visit your ophthalmologist prior to initiation of the treatment and regularly afterwards.
