After running, releasing all the built up tension in the body is so important, and it feels amazing too!
Your body will already be warm, but instead of trying to push past your flexibility limits, think of it more like gently restoring length to the muscles that have been working non-stop.
You want to focus on the areas that usually feel tight post-run: calves, hip flexors, hamstrings, glutes, and the upper back/chest.
Try these yoga poses at home post your run, and make sure you hold each one (on each side) between 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Anjaneyasana (Low Lunge)
Hold for: 30 seconds each side
Cues: Press into your front foot, don’t sink into your hip. Lengthen through your spine, open your chest.
Ardha Hanumanasana (Half Split)
Hold for: 30 seconds each side
Cues: Keep your hips stacked over the back knee. Front leg straight, toes pointed up. Lengthen though your spine before folding forward over the front leg.
Supta Kapotasana (Reclined Pigeon / Figure 4)
Hold for: 30 seconds each side
Cues: Interlace your fingers around your thigh (bottom leg) if accessible, and gently pull towards you, without lifting the hips.
Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclined Butterfly)
Hold for: 30 seconds
Cues: Place a block under your mid back, and under your head, to release tension in the upper body.
Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Dog)
Hold for: 1 minute
Cues: For 30 seconds, walk the dog (bending one knee at a time). For the last 30 seconds, keep the legs straight, heels towards the ground, hips up, rolling the upper arms inwards, neck relaxed. Think of lengthening through the spine.
