About 20 years ago, I discovered natural horsemanship.
While I enjoy riding on the odd occasion, what has always fascinated me is what happens on the ground. Give me a paddock full of horses, a cup of tea, and the chance to work on communication and connection, and I’m happy.
Over the years, running a business behind the scenes and working full-time away from the horses has meant there hasn’t always been much time for the creative projects I love. Two weeks ago, I hired a VA, Brooke, and she’s been amazing. Having support with some of the admin has given me space to focus on the things that light me up.
Lately that’s looked like working with artists on a clothing range that feels very “us”, registering a charity (more on that another day!), developing a lease program for some of our students, and creating our upcoming Horsemanship Series.
While filming some content for the series, I captured a few of my favourite exercises.
This first video is a figure 8. I prefer it to lunging because it gets the horse thinking rather than simply moving in circles. They have to pay attention, change direction, and stay connected with their handler.
Then there’s the sideways movement. This one took me YEARS to learn. I could ask for it using a fence as a guide, but being able to do it without the fence felt like a huge milestone.
These are the skills I love. They’re not about riding. They’re about communication, trust, timing, and understanding how horses think.
I’ve always believed there’s far more to horses than riding, and honestly, this is the stuff that lights me up.
