An early concept sketch I’m working on for Sun Gallop Soul.

Still rough around the edges, but I think the vibe is coming together.

Dezi had a ‘big day’ yesterday as he was in charge of cleaning out the scraps of hay from the lunch trolley and trying out the dolomite at the tie up area. (Photo of my dad and his obligatory interaction with the horses on his visit while helping me with maintenance 😅)

A quick little snapshot of some time with 2-year-old Matilda today. ❤️

Matilda is very much a true cob. She likes life sloooow… so this video has been sped up, otherwise you’d be watching it all day. 🤣

We’re working through a weaving pattern, with the goal of weaving in and out, turning, and heading back the way we came. She cottoned on to the pattern pretty quickly and it’s lovely to see her starting to think things through for herself.

One thing I’ve really noticed is how much she’s maturing. Will and I bring her out for little experiences here and there, then she heads back to the paddock for some important “being a horse” time. Most days she still gets some handling, but we’re not in a rush.

The little things tell the story. Two years ago, standing still wasn’t really on Matilda’s agenda. If she was asked to wait, she’d be pawing the ground and wondering why we weren’t moving. 🤣

Now she’s much happier to pause, think, and just be.

A little follow-on from my last groundwork video.

One thing I noticed when I watched the previous video back was that I was a bit “busy” in my body. It’s amazing what video can show us! So this time around, I was focusing on quieting myself down and being a little clearer in my communication.

Our walk work felt really good. In the trot, I spent some time motivating her. I’ve found that horses who are often labelled “lazy” are usually much more motivated when they know where they’re going and that there is an end point to the exercise.

That said, she still has moments of real exuberance and enthusiasm before checking back in with me, which is exactly what happened here and one of the things I love about working with her.

Trotting around such a tight circle is a big ask, so I’m perfectly happy for her to drop back to walk and continue around. I do think I need a longer line though! This one is only 12 feet, so next time I’ll grab my 22-foot line and see if I can stand a little more quietly and let her do more of the work.

I also levelled up our sideways work. Her feet got a little sticky at times, which is good feedback for me. Next session I’ll probably work alongside a fence line to help build a little more energy and make my direction even clearer.

One of the things I enjoy most about groundwork is that it constantly reminds me to look at my own communication first. Every session gives me something to improve.

And yes… I’m also wearing my new Sun Gallop Soul long-sleeved tee, which is proving perfect for these slower-paced, ground-based horse days.

About 20 years ago, I discovered natural horsemanship.

While I enjoy riding on the odd occasion, what has always fascinated me is what happens on the ground. Give me a paddock full of horses, a cup of tea, and the chance to work on communication and connection, and I’m happy.

Over the years, running a business behind the scenes and working full-time away from the horses has meant there hasn’t always been much time for the creative projects I love. Two weeks ago, I hired a VA, Brooke, and she’s been amazing. Having support with some of the admin has given me space to focus on the things that light me up.

Lately that’s looked like working with artists on a clothing range that feels very “us”, registering a charity (more on that another day!), developing a lease program for some of our students, and creating our upcoming Horsemanship Series.

While filming some content for the series, I captured a few of my favourite exercises.

This first video is a figure 8. I prefer it to lunging because it gets the horse thinking rather than simply moving in circles. They have to pay attention, change direction, and stay connected with their handler.

Then there’s the sideways movement. This one took me YEARS to learn. I could ask for it using a fence as a guide, but being able to do it without the fence felt like a huge milestone.

These are the skills I love. They’re not about riding. They’re about communication, trust, timing, and understanding how horses think.

I’ve always believed there’s far more to horses than riding, and honestly, this is the stuff that lights me up.
