๐ Behaviour is communication, and understanding whatโs happening beneath the surface can make all the difference.
For people living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), emotional regulation can be affected by much more than the situation itself. Fatigue, pain, sleep disruption, cognitive differences, and the physical impacts of DMD can all reduce a person's window of tolerance, making it harder to manage everyday stress.
When someone moves outside their window of tolerance, we may see fight, flight, or freeze responses. This is not because they are choosing to behave that way, but because their nervous system is overwhelmed.
Knowing these factors helps us respond with understanding rather than simply reacting to behaviour.
At DMD Therapeutic & Behavioural Consulting, we work alongside individuals, families, schools, and teams of stakeholders to help them understand the reasons behind behaviour we see in DMD. Itโs from this we work together to develop practical, evidence-based strategies that support emotional regulation to increase quality of life.
Every person deserves supports that work with them, not against them ๐
