Diabetes is the epidemic of the 21st century and the biggest challenge confronting Australia’s health system. There are currently almost 1.5 million Australians living with all types of diabetes and up to 500k people living with silent, undiagnosed type 2 diabetes.

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition where the body is unable to effectively regulate blood sugar (glucose). Over time, high blood sugar levels can damage the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves and blood vessels if left untreated.

Who is at greater risk?

You may have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes if you:

■ Have a family history of diabetes
■ Are overweight or carry excess weight around your waist
■ Are physically inactive
■ Have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
■ Have had gestational diabetes during pregnancy
■ Are over 40 years of age (or younger for some higher-risk populations)

The good news is that many cases of type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented through healthy lifestyle choices, including regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a balanced diet.

Living with diabetes?

If you have diabetes, your GP can help coordinate your care.

You may be eligible for a Medicare-funded GP Care Plan, which can provide access to subsidised appointments with allied health professionals such as a Dietitian or Diabetes Educator.

These services can help you better understand your condition, improve your blood sugar control and reduce your risk of long-term complications.

Speak with your regular GP to find out if you’re eligible.

Could you go alcohol-free for one month?

Every July, thousands of Australians take part in Dry July – a challenge to give up alcohol for the month while raising funds to support people affected by cancer. Every dollar raised helps improve the comfort, care and wellbeing of cancer patients, their families and carers.

Whether you’re participating in Dry July or simply looking to reset your habits, taking a break from alcohol can have some real health benefits, including:

😴 Better sleep
⚡ More energy
🧠 Improved concentration
⚖️ Reduced calorie intake
❤️ Lower long-term health risks

It’s also a great opportunity to reflect on your relationship with alcohol and discover how good you can feel without it.

If you’re thinking about making positive lifestyle changes or would like support to improve your long-term health, our GPs are here to help.

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world – which is why regular skin checks are so important.

At InHealth, we have a range of GPs with a special interest in skin cancer medicine who are available to provide thorough skin checks to help detect sun damage and skin cancers early, when they are most treatable.

During your appointment, your GP will carefully examine your skin from head to toe, looking for any suspicious or changing moles, spots or lesions. If anything needs closer attention, your GP will guide you through the next steps.

A skin check is especially important if you:

☀️ Spend a lot of time in the sun
👨‍👩‍👧 Have a family history of skin cancer
🔎 Have noticed a mole or spot that has changed in size, shape, or colour
📅 Haven’t had a skin check in the past 12 months

Most skin cancers can be successfully treated when caught early, making a simple skin check one of the most valuable things you can do for your long-term health.

If you’re due for a check – or have noticed a spot you’re unsure about – book an appointment with one of our GPs.

Our health needs evolve as we get older – which is why annual health assessments are such an important part of proactive care.

Patients aged 75 years or older are eligible for an annual comprehensive health assessment with their regular GP.

These consults are fully bulk billed (for Medicare card holders) and designed to help you and your regular GP stay on top of your health and wellbeing, and identify potential health issues early, so you can stay healthier, more independent, and continue doing the things you enjoy.

During the assessment, your GP and nurse will take the time to review important aspects of your health, including:

💊 Your medical history and current medications
🩸 Blood pressure and general physical health
💪 Mobility, balance and risk of falls
🧠 Memory and cognitive health
🍏 Nutrition and lifestyle factors
🦻 Hearing, vision and daily living supports

It’s also an opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have and ensure you’re receiving the right support and preventative care moving forward.

If you’re 75 years or older, speak to our team about booking your annual bulk billed health assessment.
