One of the most rewarding parts of my work as a speech pathologist is helping children and families discover a way to communicate that truly works for them.
When it comes to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution. Every child has different strengths, preferences, motor skills, communication needs, and goals. That's why at Whale Song, we don't simply prescribe the AAC system or device we're most familiar with.
Instead, we take the time to explore, trial, and compare a range of AAC options. We work closely with families, educators, and support teams to find the system that best matches the individual child—not the clinician.
Sometimes the best fit is a high-tech speech-generating device. Sometimes it's a low tech resource, a different access method, or a completely different communication system altogether. Our role is to help families navigate the options and make informed decisions based on real-world use and meaningful outcomes.
AAC is not about finding the "best" device. It's about finding the best device for that child.
Every child deserves a voice that feels accessible, empowering, and authentically their own. 💙
