🎲 Game Breaks = Therapy Too! 🥪

Sometimes the best part of therapy is taking a little break to play! Game breaks can be an important part of speech therapy because they help support motivation, engagement, turn-taking, social communication and positive connections with our therapists. 💬✨

And of course, we can sneak in some speech practice while we play! 👀

Today we used Slamwich to practice the /sl/ cluster in words like Slamwich and slap because practicing speech sounds is always more fun when it’s part of a game! 🙌

Who doesn’t love a therapy session with a little friendly competition? 🥪

Activity of the Week: Bubble Talk!

🫧You only need a bottle of bubbles to target so many communication skills!🫧

Try:
💙 Language: Comment on what you see - “Big bubble!”, “Pop!”, “More bubbles!”
🩵 Attention: Wait for your child to look at you before blowing more bubbles.
💙 Requesting: Pause and encourage your child to say or sign “more.”
🩵 Following directions: “Pop the big bubble!” or “Catch three bubbles!”
💙 Speech sounds: Practice sounds like /p/, /b/, /m/, or fun words like “pop,” “bubble,” and “more.”

Remember: Keep it fun! The goal is communication, not perfection.

🌟 Activity of the Week: Emotions within Pretend Play 🌟

This week we used emotion flashcards within pretend play and role-play to build emotional understanding, language and higher-level play skills.

By acting out different scenarios, children practiced identifying emotions, talking about how characters might feel, problem-solving and using more complex language to create stories and conversations. Pretend play also encourages perspective-taking, flexible thinking and social communication skills.

Try it at home by creating simple role-play scenarios and asking questions like:
💭 “How is your character feeling?”
🎭 “What happened to make them feel that way?”
💡 “What could they do next?”

Learning through play is one of the best ways to support communication!

🦖 Activity of the Week: Oi Dinosaurs! 🦖

This week’s story is Oi Dinosaurs! by Kes Gray and Jim Field a funny book that’s perfect for exploring rhyming words!

Rhyming helps children develop important early literacy skills by building sound awareness, listening skills and vocabulary. As you read together, pause and see if your child can guess the rhyming word before you turn the page or think of another word that rhymes!

📚 Try this at home: Pick a simple word (like cat) and take turns thinking of as many rhyming words as you can. Remember, real and silly words are all part of the fun! 🐱✨
