Here’s what to do. 👁️

If you notice a bubble underneath your scleral lens after insertion, it’s important not to leave it there.

A bubble means part of the eye isn’t sitting beneath the fluid reservoir as intended, which can affect both your vision and comfort.

For Richard, one advancement that stands out is the way we’re now able to help babies born with congenital cataracts.

When a cataract is removed early in life, these tiny patients can require contact lenses to provide the focusing power their natural lens would normally provide. And as Richard explains, the advances in contact lens technology and fitting techniques have changed enormously over the course of his career.

Today, we can fit contact lenses for babies at an incredibly young age, supporting their vision during one of the most important periods of visual development.

After decades in optometry, it’s changes like these that Richard finds particularly rewarding, seeing just how far the profession has come and what is now possible for even our littlest patients. 💙

We are proud of Jacinda and Michaela, who presented on the application of contact lenses for dry eye at the Dry Eye Society event this week Chin Chin

Contact lenses have often been thought of as being unsuitable for patients with dry eye disease. In our clinic, the reality is often the opposite!

For certain patients, the right lens is the treatment; not the problem.

Scleral lenses in particular can protect a compromised ocular surface while restoring vision, and material and modality choices can keep symptomatic patients comfortably in lenses; rather than out of them.

Jacinda and Michaela shared practical, real world clinical experience alongside Dr Justin Friebel, who presented on lid abnormalities and Dr Leigh Plowman who discussed the application of Xiidra.

This was followed by an expert panel Q&A.

Ever wondered why your optometrist puts that orange strip in your eye? 👀🧡

It might look simple, but fluorescein dye can reveal an incredible amount about what’s happening on the surface of your eye.

Under a blue light, fluorescein helps us assess the cornea and can highlight things that may otherwise be difficult to see, from areas of irritation or damage to how a contact lens is interacting with the eye.

And in specialty contact lens practice, it can give us valuable information about how a lens is fitting and where adjustments may be needed.
