5 things you probably don’t know about me...Since I’m usually the one behind the scenes, I thought it was probably time to share a few things about me that have absolutely nothing to do with first aid.

I’m an unapologetic woo woo girl.
I regularly see psychics and genuinely love all things a little bit spiritual. In fact, a psychic predicted that I would start this business two years before we actually did. At the time, I thought it sounded pretty far-fetched. Turns out, maybe she knew something I didn’t!

I was accepted to study medicine in 2020.
It was something I had worked towards, but ultimately I decided it wasn’t the right time for me. Looking back, I think everything worked out exactly how it was supposed to.

I only came to Bathurst to study at university.
The plan was never to stay. Somehow, Bathurst went from being a temporary stop while I studied to very much feeling like home. Funny how life works out.

I’m completely hopeless in the kitchen.
Cooking is definitely not my strong suit, but thankfully my life-saving skills are considerably better than my cooking skills. So if you ever need me in an emergency... just don’t ask me to cater it afterwards.

I love LEGO.
Give me a quiet afternoon and a big LEGO set and I’m pretty happy. The Harry Potter collection is definitely my vibe, and yes, I absolutely consider building LEGO a legitimate hobby.

We’re seeing a big push from the mines we work with to have their ERT teams and fitters trained in Low Voltage Rescue (LVR), rather than limiting the training to their electrical teams.

And honestly, we think it makes a lot of sense.

In a low voltage emergency, it’s often the electrician who needs to be rescued. If they’re the only person on site trained in LVR, they may not be able to help themselves.

Having other members of the team trained and confident in what to do can make a huge difference when something goes wrong.

We use specialised moulage equipment and our LV Rescue kits during training to make the scenarios as realistic as possible. It’s one thing to talk through an electrical emergency, but being faced with a simulated casualty and having to actually respond is a very different experience.

We’re really pleased to see more mines taking this approach and recognising that LVR skills can be valuable across the whole team, not just within the electrical crew.

A couple of months ago we spent 3 amazing days with the team at CSA Cobar.

A big thank you to Leighton Trudgett, Kimberlie Sariman, Alex Lennon, Shane Downer and Caitlin Thorpe for their time, effort and dedication throughout the training.

We genuinely love our time with CSA Cobar. We’ve had such great feedback from the team, and the engagement we get from their training groups is always fantastic. It’s clear that they take their training seriously and really value making sure their people are prepared.

We were also really pleased to see CSA Cobar invest in three of our first aid kits, which we have specifically designed and collated for the underground environment.

Working with mining operations has given us a really good understanding of the challenges that come with providing first aid underground. A standard first aid kit often just doesn’t cover what you may actually need in an underground emergency, which is why we’ve put a lot of thought into what goes into these kits and how they can best support a response when it matters.

Seeing the mines we work with recognise that and invest in purpose-built equipment for their crews is something we really enjoy seeing.

Thanks again to the team at CSA Cobar. We always enjoy coming out to site and look forward to the next one.

Sometimes the best business ideas (and biggest laughs) come from the most unexpected places.

Recently, I sat down with our Operations Manager, Britt, over a coffee to work through our never-ending list of things that needed to be done over the coming weeks.

One of the best parts about working together is that we genuinely enjoy bouncing ideas around, but with Britt based in Wollongong and me in Bathurst, we don’t get as many opportunities to sit down face-to-face as we’d like.

We decided the best place to start was with a good old-fashioned “brain dump", because honestly, that’s exactly what it was. We were both feeling a little overwhelmed by everything we had happening, so we thought the only way forward was to get everything out of our heads and onto paper.

The plan was simple: write it all down, organise it, and start ticking things off.

Except when we finished… the document was over 6 pages long.

Instead of feeling relieved, we both just stared at it thinking, “How are we ever going to get through all of this?”

Then came the best part.

When we saved the document, it accidentally became our “Brian Dump”.

And for some reason, that tiny typo gave us both the laugh we needed. Every time we opened the document, there was Brian, our very unofficial project manager, reminding us to just tackle one thing at a time.

So from now on, our big lists, ideas, plans and problem-solving sessions will forever be known as a “Brian Dump”.

Sometimes you don’t need to have everything figured out straight away… sometimes you just need a coffee, a good laugh, and a plan (even if it’s managed by Brian).

Ever wondered what it’s like to attend a public first aid course with us?

This was one of our recent course days and what a fantastic turnout! We had a full house with participants completing a range of nationally recognised first aid qualifications throughout the day.

From CPR refreshers and first aid in education and care settings, through to advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy training, it was great to see so many people investing in the skills that can make a real difference when it matters most.

Our public courses are designed to make first aid training accessible, practical and convenient, whether you’re attending for work, compliance, or simply to build confidence in an emergency.

I recently had the privilege of joining the Voices in VET podcast, hosted by Allen's Training, for a conversation about something I'm incredibly passionate about—first aid education.

We spoke about how my experience as a current on-road Intensive Care and Extended Care Paramedic has shaped the way I deliver training, why building confidence is just as important as teaching practical skills, and how real-world emergency response influences the scenarios we create in the classroom.

It was an honour to be invited onto the podcast and to share some of the experiences that have shaped not only me as a paramedic, but also the way we approach training at First Aid Training Specialists.

Don’t forget to overthink the best-case scenario too.

As a business owner, it’s easy to spend so much time thinking about what could go wrong.

What if this doesn’t work?
What if we don’t grow?
What if all the time, energy and sacrifices don’t lead anywhere?

It’s almost like our brains are trained to prepare for disappointment before we’ve even given ourselves permission to hope.

But sometimes I have to remind myself to picture the other side too.

What if it does work?
What if the late nights, the risks, the decisions and the hard days are all building something bigger than I imagined?
What if the people we train walk away feeling more confident because of what we’ve created?
What if this is just the beginning?

Building a business is a constant balance between preparing for challenges and believing in the possibility of success.

So while we should always be ready for the things that don’t go to plan, we shouldn’t forget to imagine what happens when everything goes right too.

Here’s to overthinking the best-case scenario every now and then.

Central West First Aid Training Specialists is seeking a current Paramedic to join our team as a Trainer and Assessor, delivering nationally recognised first aid training throughout the Central West region of New South Wales.

Essential requirements:

Current registration as a Paramedic
Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40122 or equivalent)
Strong communication and presentation skills
A professional, enthusiastic and reliable approach to training delivery

This role involves delivering engaging, high-quality first aid courses to a variety of clients across the Central West, including workplaces, community groups and the general public.

One of the best parts of what we do isn't just delivering great training, it's building relationships with the incredible businesses we get to work with.

Recently, we had the pleasure of delivering Provide First Aid training for the team at Fantastic Aussie Tours in Katoomba, and we genuinely loved every minute of it. The team was engaged, enthusiastic and made the day an absolute pleasure.

After the course, the General Manager went out of their way to thank us. Moments like that never get old.

Running a small business can be busy, but receiving kind words from our clients is something we'll never take for granted. It reminds us why we're so passionate about what we do and motivates us to keep raising the bar.

To the team at Fantastic Aussie Tours, thank you for trusting us with your training. We hope to see you all again in the future!
