Multitasking has a reputation as a skill worth mastering. The research tells a different story.

What the brain actually does when we "multitask" is switch rapidly between tasks, disengaging from one and reconfiguring for the next. Each switch carries a real cost in speed, accuracy and memory, a finding confirmed repeatedly across decades of cognitive psychology research and more recently through fMRI and EEG studies.

There's no true parallel processing happening. The brain is constantly deciding what deserves attention right now, and that decision has a price, even when it feels instant.

Single-tasking isn't a productivity trend. It's how attention actually works.

As a practitioner who sees the impact on the brain, I wholly support this petition.

The use of screens in schools needs to have a clear and specific purpose. And the research shows schools do not need to prepare kids to use technology, nor do many of the learning apps support proper learning.

Homelessness Week runs from today until 9 August, and the theme is Homelessness Action Now.

Ongoing housing instability doesn't stay "outside" the body. Chronic stress keeps the nervous system in a heightened state, and has a physiological impact on the brain structures. Over time this affects attention, emotional regulation, sleep, and the ability to think clearly and make decisions.

Homelessness Week is a reminder that housing isn't just a roof. It's one of the basic conditions the brain needs to function well, whether you're 8 or 80. Supporting housing security is supporting people's capacity to cope, recover, and rebuild.

Neurotherapy sits in an interesting space. There is a large body of research behind it, and it is used widely internationally, but in Australia it is still considered experimental. That is worth being upfront about.

What that means in practice is that it is not a first-line treatment, and it is not presented as one here. It is an option worth knowing about, particularly for people who have not found what they were looking for through the approaches that are more commonly recommended.

It might be someone who has tried medication and found it didn't suit them, or who simply doesn't want to go down that path. It might be someone who has been through therapy and felt it helped, but sensed something was still missing. It might be a parent who has watched their child go through assessments and interventions without seeing the change they had hoped for.

It might also be someone who simply wants to understand what is happening in their brain before deciding what to do next. Or someone preparing for a high-demand period and looking for a way to support their cognitive performance that goes beyond study habits.

Chronic pain is more than just a physical experience. For the people living with it, it reshapes multiple facets of their lives.

It changes how a person sees themselves. The things they used to do, the roles they held, the version of themselves they identified with, all of it shifts when pain becomes a constant presence. Identity does not survive that unchanged.

It changes relationships. Pain that others cannot see is pain that is often not fully understood. Partners, family members, and friends may struggle to comprehend what they cannot observe. The person in pain may withdraw, not because they want to, but because explaining it is exhausting, and being misunderstood is worse than silence.

It changes participation. Work, socialising, parenting, exercise, community life, all of it becomes harder to sustain when managing pain is the primary task of every day. Social isolation isn't a side effect of chronic pain, it can become the lived reality.

It also carries a significant cognitive load. Constant pain demands attention, interrupts concentration, fragments sleep, and occupies mental bandwidth that would otherwise go toward thinking, planning, and connecting with others. The brain under chronic pain is a brain under sustained, unrelenting demand.

Most people don't realise they are already using neuromodulation every day. What you eat and the medications you take both alter brain chemistry. That is neuromodulation in its most familiar form.

ECT and TMS sit further along the spectrum. ECT delivers around 800 milliamps of electrical current to induce a controlled seizure under general anaesthetic, approximately 300 to 400 times stronger than the current used in tDCS, tACS, or tRNS. TMS generates magnetic pulses strong enough to trigger neuronal firing directly. Both have established clinical applications and both sit outside the scope of this clinic.

What is offered here works very differently. tDCS, tACS, and tRNS deliver between 0.1 and 2.5 milliamps of targeted electrical current, not to override brain activity, but to modulate it. To guide increases or decreases of activity in specific regions, supporting the brain's own capacity to change. pEMF operates at a considerably lower intensity than TMS, gently influencing the conditions under which neurons fire rather than triggering firing directly. The brain is no different. Focus, processing speed, the ability to stay calm under pressure and retrieve information when it counts, these are functions that can be trained. Not just practised through repetition, but actively supported at a neurological level.

It is not a new idea in elite sport. Many athletes and professional teams now include neurofeedback or neuromodulation as part of their preparation for major events, recognising that the brain is as trainable as the body, and just as important to performance under pressure.

Brain activity is measurable. And what that measurement reveals can be genuinely illuminating.

Which is a shame, as the brain is the one organ that rarely gets assessed when conducting mental health diagnosis. There is an important distinction between a diagnostic label and understanding what is actually happening in someone's brain. A QEEG assessment sits in the latter.

It does not diagnose, and it cannot infer cause. What it can do is provide insight that links brain activity to your experiences, giving the practitioner a basis to explain why you feel or function the way you do at times. That understanding then informs something practical: guidance to strategies for support, whether at home, at school, or at work. Because there is a big difference between knowing your attention isn't great, and knowing your attention is not great as a region of your brain is randomly disrupting it. It allows the correct region of the brain to be trained.

The primary purpose of a QEEG at The Neurotherapy Clinic is to allow the practitioner to design an individualised neurofeedback or neuromodulation protocol built around how your brain is actually functioning, rather than a generalised approach.

A QEEG assessment is a way of recording brainwave activity to better understand how someone's brain is functioning. It follows a clear process, and knowing what to expect can make the experience feel a lot more familiar before you arrive.

It starts with preparation. The skin at the forehead and earlobes is lightly exfoliated and cleaned, a cap is fitted to the head, and a small amount of conductive gel is applied to each sensor to ensure signal quality meets the standard required for a reliable recording. Good contact between the sensors and the scalp is what allows the brain's electrical signals to be picked up clearly and consistently.

Once everything is in place, the recording begins. You sit quietly for around ten minutes with your eyes open, and then another ten minutes with your eyes closed. Each condition gives the practitioner a slightly different window into how your brain is working at rest.

After the resting recording, two short tasks are completed. One is visual and one is auditory. In each task, you watch or listen for a specific target within a series of sounds or images, and press a button when you detect it. These tasks measure how quickly and accurately your brain processes and responds to information, capturing attention, processing speed, and the timing of your neural responses in real time.

When the recording is finished, the practitioner reviews everything in the context of your history and what brought you in. From there, they provide an interpretation and any recommendations for what might come next.

Screen time conversations tend to collapse into two camps: screens are fine, or screens are harmful. Neither is especially useful, and neither is what the research actually says.

What the evidence does support is that both the amount of time and the type of use matter. High daily usage consistently shows associations with poorer mental health outcomes in teenagers, and passive consumption, spending that time scrolling through algorithmically curated content rather than actively engaging, compounds those risks further. What that time displaces also matters: sleep, physical activity, and face-to-face connection are each independently linked to adolescent wellbeing.

Platform design is also part of this picture in a way that broader screen time conversations tend to overlook. Some platforms are built around recommendation systems that optimise for engagement above everything else. For a brain that is still developing impulse control, identity, and emotional regulation, that architecture is not a neutral backdrop. It actively shapes what a young person is exposed to, how long they stay, and what kind of content gets reinforced over time.

None of this means social media is inherently harmful. It means the platform matters, the type of use matters, the amount of time matters, and understanding all three gives young people, parents, and practitioners a more honest starting point than the usual debate tends to offer.
