Why do people believe lies instead of the truth?

People believe lies over the truth because the human brain prefers simple, familiar, and emotionally comforting stories over complex facts.

Key Psychological Reasons

• Truth Bias: Humans naturally default to trusting others because constant suspicion is mentally exhausting. Assuming people are honest helps us navigate daily life quickly.

• Cognitive Fluency: Lies are often designed to be simple, neat, and easy to understand. The truth is usually messy, nuanced, and requires deep mental effort to process.

• The Illusory Effect: When a falsehood is repeated often, it starts to feel familiar. The brain mistakes this familiarity for accuracy.

• Emotional Appeal: Lies use strong feelings like fear, anger, or excitement. These intense emotions bypass our logical thinking and make us accept the claim faster.

• Confirmation Bias: People readily accept ideas that fit what they already want to believe or what their social group expects.

Of course, there's an even deeper psychology behind this, but if you've ever struggled with telling the truth and no one believing you, or worse still, seeing a group accepting blatant lies, you now have an answer.

Appointments are currently available at Norwest until 15th September, 2026 and thereafter at our Castle Hill Clinic.

Melancholia. What is it?

At its core, melancholia is an overwhelming, deep-seated sense of sorrow and numbness that feels heavier and more persistent than everyday sadness.

While everyday sadness usually has a clear trigger and fades with time or positive events, melancholia feels like a fog that covers everything, making it almost impossible to feel pleasure or motivation.

Historically and medically, the concept spans two main contexts:

1. Historical & Poetic View
For centuries, "melancholy" was seen as a temperament—a pensive, reflective, and sometimes artistic state of mind. The word comes from ancient Greek (melas meaning black, chole meaning bile), based on the old medical theory that an excess of "black bile" caused a dark, contemplative mood.

2. Modern Clinical Definition
In modern psychology and psychiatry, melancholia refers to Melancholic Depression (or Major Depressive Disorder with melancholic features). It is considered a particularly severe form of depression with distinct physical and psychological symptoms:

Complete loss of pleasure (Anhedonia): Even usually joyful events bring zero emotional response.

Lack of mood reactivity: Good news or positive interactions fail to briefly lift the mood.

Physical slowdown or agitation: Movements, speech, and thought processes become noticeably sluggish (or, conversely, manifest as restless pacing).

Diurnal variation: Symptoms are often significantly worse in the early morning.

Distinct physical symptoms: Waking up hours earlier than normal, significant weight loss, or intense, irrational feelings of guilt.

Think of standard sadness as a rainstorm that eventually passes. In contrast, melancholia is a total power outage—it slows down the mind and body, draining the ability to feel warmth or brightness until balance is restored.

Low Capacity Days.

What are they?

A low capacity day happens when your physical, mental, or emotional energy is too low to match your original plans. Instead of forcing high productivity, you need to lower your expectations, drop non-essential tasks, and focus only on basic care and survival.

Why Capacity Drops ~

Finite resources:
Stress, poor sleep, illness, sensory overload, or long periods of overworking drain your energy reserves.

The push-and-crash cycle:
Pushing too hard for too long stops proper recovery, leading to a very low baseline of energy.

How to Handle the Low Capacity Day ~

Drop the bar: Accept that today looks different. Shift from ambitious goals to autopilot or survival tasks.

Eat simply & easily: Choose low-effort, nourishing food options that require minimal preparation.

Rest passively: Allow your body and nervous system to genuinely slow down without guilt.

Audit commitments: Cancel or postpone anything that is not urgent or critical.

It is important to remember that low capacity days can happen to anyone. If you start to have more low capacity days than regular days, it may be time to seek help.

Isn't this the truth? As human beings, we all want to be seen, heard, loved and valued.

Sadly, the human experience means that for many, we may not get to experience all of these feelings and emotions. We may not feel heard, seen or even valued.

You can make a difference for the people in your life by simply holding space, being grateful, and sitting quietly in full presence when required.

A true gift is when you listen to hear their story, without comparison, judgement or the need to formulate a reply as the speaker is opening their heart.
