Young Leaders of Tasmania - YLOT

Young Leaders of Tasmania is a registered, not-for-profit organisation that aims to empower young people of all abilities to reach their full potential.

Background:
Young Leaders of Tasmania was borne from the experiences of a young girl living with severe disability, Isabella Franks. Isabella was found to significantly influence the personal growth and leadership qualities of fellow students and those around her. It was through this positive influence upon the lives of others that a great discovery was made. In short, “When we innovate to deliver

higher standards of living for those in greatest need, everyone benefits.”

True innovation tends not to stem from the average but from the needs of those that are further away from the population mass. As they say, “necessity is the mother of invention”. The Young Leaders of Tasmania "2017 Future Leaders Program" provides students with opportunities to stand out and to move accepted averages higher, for everybody’s benefit.

🌸🌿 A Blooming Beautiful Spring Planting day at Hellyer College! 🌿🌸

There was plenty of chatter, laughter, and creativity recently, as our Buddies from North West Support School - Burnie Campus and worked together to paint their very own flowerpots. 🎨🪴 Once the painting was finished, it was time to choose some pretty flowers and carefully plant them into their colorful creations. 🌺🌼

And of course, everyone had their own idea of what made the perfect activity! One student decided that a relaxing foot spa was definitely the way to go while two Hellyer College students painted her pots for her. 🥰 This student, Miss S, then took her role very seriously, carefully judging both pots to decide which one was the winner! 👩‍⚖️🪴😂

This visit was another wonderful example of how YLOT creates opportunities for friendship, inclusion, choice and connection, and we loved every minute of it! 💚

A huge thank you to the Hellyer College students and staff for making our NWSS students feel so welcome. 🌸

Friday Cooking Buddies have been putting our new Thermomix through its paces each week, and it's safe to say it's been a huge hit! 👩‍🍳🍪🥘

The easy-to-use, accessible design has helped everyone get involved in preparing and creating some delicious treats, following the step-by-step instructions with amazing visual directions.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who purchased a raffle ticket to support our Thermomix fundraiser. Your generosity is making a real difference, helping our participants build confidence, independence and life skills in the kitchen every Friday. 💚

Activities like bike riding create opportunities for friendship, inclusion, and shared experiences while promoting confidence, wellbeing, and a sense of belonging. Most importantly, they remind us that when young people come together, barriers are broken down and meaningful connections are formed. 🚴‍♀️⭐

We're proud to see our Bellerive Primary School Young Leaders growing as inclusive leaders and creating a community where everyone feels valued, supported, and able to participate.

Southern Support School - School Buddies Program 💚

🧱 From building towers to building connections.

Our Young Leader's from Clarence High School had a fantastic time working with their Southern Support School Buddies to create block towers, using creativity, communication, and teamwork to bring their ideas to life.

While the towers may not last forever, the confidence, friendships, and sense of achievement developed through activities like these have a lasting impact. Through shared experiences, young people learn to support one another, celebrate different strengths, and build meaningful connections.

What an amazing reminder that great things can be achieved when we work together! 💚✨ Well done everyone!

Our Wednesday Social Buddies group had a fabulous visit from our local Police recently. 👮‍♀️💙💛

We spent some time looking at visuals and talking about community safety, and importantly, that Police are safe Community Helpers. It was also a great chance to dress up in uniform, have a chat and get to know our local police in a relaxed and friendly environment!

These everyday experiences are such an important part of building confidence and feeling connected to the community.

A big thank you to Tasmania Police for coming along and spending time with us. We really appreciate it! 💙💚

📢 Speech Pathology Week 2026 🗣️

This week, we celebrated Speech Pathology Week and recognised the incredible impact speech pathologists have on the lives of the young people we support.

To acknowledge Speech Pathology Week, YLOT hosted a "Communication Partner" training session for our staff and Young Leaders. This valuable training strengthened our understanding of how to better support participants with diverse communication needs and create more inclusive, accessible environments.

A special thank you to Catherine from Good Chat for facilitating this session and sharing her expertise, knowledge, and passion for communication access. Your support helps us build a more communication-friendly society and better outcomes for the young people we serve.

💚Communication is a human right, and together we can help ensure every voice is heard.

🌊💚 Don College visits the NWSS Devonport Aqua Room! 💚🌊
Yesterday we had the pleasure of welcoming the wonderful students to the West Support School - Devonport Campus Aqua Room, and what a fantastic visit it was!
Bella also shared her presentation, reflecting on her time with the NWSS students and everything she has learnt along the way. 🌟

Bella spoke beautifully about how much she has learnt about the different ways people communicate and how this experience has given her knowledge and understanding that she will carry with her for the rest of her life. 💕 It was wonderful to hear her recognise the value of communication, patience, understanding and inclusion.

Even more exciting is that Bella has now identified her top three career pathways:
👩‍⚕️ Nurse
👩‍🏫 Teacher's Assistant
💚 Support Worker

What an incredible outcome from her time with the students! Seeing our Young Leaders discover new skills, build confidence and start thinking about their future careers is exactly what these experiences are all about.
A huge thank you to Bella and all the Don College students for the wonderful connections they are building with our NWSS students. We can't wait to see where Bella's journey takes her! 🌟

Today we were super excited to welcome Kathryn, Bake with Kate - Thermomix Consultant , back to the Social Hub to set up and give us a demo on our brand-new Thermomix! 💚🖤

We think the pictures tell the story, everyone is thrilled with the accessibility and ease of cooking, and we can’t wait to see what our group cook up next!

This week, our students were thrilled to reunite with their buddies at the North West Support School - Devonport Campus Annex as part of the Reverse YLOT Programme. After the school holidays, there were plenty of smiles, excitement, and warm welcomes all around!

The Don College students are preparing presentations about last term’s activities, all of which were student-led. Each student has chosen to focus on one of their buddies from the support school, highlighting the friendships, learning, and shared experiences they have enjoyed together.

Yesterday, Iris was the first to present, and she did an absolutely amazing job. She had created a thoughtful and colourful poster that perfectly reflected her buddy and their time together. The smile on his face when she invited him to stand beside her during the presentation was priceless.

What impressed me most was the care and thought Iris had put into her presentation. I also loved how honest she was about feeling nervous before speaking in front of the group. It was a wonderful reminder that stepping outside our comfort zone can lead to something really special.

We are incredibly proud of all of our Don College students and can’t wait to see the rest of the presentations over the coming weeks. 💚
