🔄 Can diabetes be reversed?

The word “reversed” is often used online—but **remission** is the more accurate term.

Some people living with **type 2 diabetes** may achieve remission, particularly following substantial and sustained weight loss.

Remission means:

✅ HbA1c remains below 6.5% (48 mmol/mol)
✅ For at least three months
✅ Without glucose-lowering medication

However, remission does not mean type 2 diabetes has been cured. Blood glucose levels can rise again, so ongoing monitoring and regular diabetes health checks remain essential.

**Type 1 diabetes cannot currently be reversed or put into remission.** People living with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin.

Everyone’s circumstances are different. Speak with your GP, SugarFit (Credentialled Diabetes Educators) or diabetes healthcare team before changing your eating plan, physical activity or medication.

💬 Have you heard diabetes described as being “reversed”? Let us know what questions you have below.

🩸 Could you be at risk of Type 1 diabetes?

Many people are surprised to learn that Type 1 diabetes can develop months or even years before symptoms appear. Early screening can identify diabetes-related antibodies and help detect risk before diabetes develops. This may allow earlier education, planning, and in some cases access to emerging therapies that may help delay the onset of Type 1 diabetes.

Early detection can also reduce the risk of a serious complication called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), which is often present at diagnosis when Type 1 diabetes goes unrecognised.

If you have a family history of Type 1 diabetes, a family history of autoimmune conditions, or simply want to understand your risk, screening may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

📞 Speak with a SugarFit Credentialled Diabetes Educator for further information about Type 1 diabetes screening and whether it may be appropriate for you.

👅💊 Have you noticed food tasting different since starting diabetes medications?

Some diabetes medications — and diabetes itself — may affect the way foods taste. Metallic taste, dry mouth, reduced sweetness, or altered flavours can sometimes occur and may impact appetite and enjoyment of food.

This infographic explains some common causes and simple tips that may help. 👇

Following on from our recent post about creatine and kidney health, one of the most common questions asked is:
“Can creatine affect my blood tests?”
The answer is yes — but not in the way many people think.
Creatine supplementation can sometimes raise creatinine levels on blood tests, which may make kidney function appear lower than it actually is. This is why it’s important to let your healthcare team know if you’re taking creatine, especially before blood tests.
This post explains:
✔️ How creatine affects blood markers
✔️ Which blood tests may be influenced
✔️ Why exercise can also change results
✔️ Important considerations for kidney health & diabetes
Education is key when interpreting blood results correctly 💧

Creatine is more than just a gym supplement 💪

Emerging research suggests creatine may support muscle health, exercise performance, and blood sugar management when combined with movement and a healthy lifestyle.

Our latest SugarFit post explores:

🔹 Safe use reminders
🔹 When to speak with your healthcare team
