Ever wondered what a "tight back" actually looks like? Can you spot the muscle twitching in this video? These fasciculations indicate muscle spasm. The more intense the fasciculations, the more severe the spasm (and most likely pain) is.

Muscle fasciculations are looked at in conjunction with other behaviour such as avoidance and facial expressions to help determine the severity of pain.

Is your horse ducking away when you groom or pat them? It could be pain and is worth investigating. Message me today to see how I can help.

Dry needling in animal physiotherapy 🐴🐢

Dry needling involves the use of fine needles to target muscle trigger points, helping to release tension, reduce pain, and improve movement. In both horses and dogs, it can be especially effective for addressing tight, overworked muscles and supporting overall performance and recovery.

Many animals relax quickly during treatment, and it can be a great addition to a wider physiotherapy plan β€” always tailored to the individual and carried out with careful assessment and handling.

Whether it’s a performance horse needing optimal muscle function or a dog recovering from injury, dry needling can play a valuable role in restoring comfort and mobility.

Do you think your horse or dog would benefit from dry needling? Contact me for an appointment today!

Spot the tape! Did you know, taping isn’t just for human injuries β€” it’s a powerful tool in both equine and canine physiotherapy too 🐴🐢

From supporting tendons and ligaments to enhancing proprioception, reducing swelling and deloading sore muscles, therapeutic taping can make a real difference in recovery and performance. The images above are two different horses, both with taping designed to support the flexor tendons and suspensory ligaments whilst also providing compression to fetlock swelling.

Every tape application is tailored to the individual animal β€” there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Proper assessment and technique are key to getting the best results safely and effectively.

Do you think your horse or dog would benefit from taping? Contact me today to find out more or book an appointment πŸ΄πŸŽπŸΆπŸ•

Why choose a qualified physiotherapist and what can we treat? As an animal physiotherapist, I've completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy followed by a Post Graduate Diploma of Veterinary Physiotherapy to be fully qualified. This allows me to deliver the highest quality, evidence-based care to you, your horse or your dog.

The conditions listed below are within a physiotherapist's scope of practice to treat (for horses), which also includes acute soft tissue injuries, post-surgical rehab and general performance issues.

Think your horse would benefit from physiotherapy? Contact me today and find out more about how I can help.
