What does your calendar suggest what actually matters to you? Not what should matter, but what the actual evidence shows?

Is it time to do a life audit?

See one of my latest blogs "Feeling Stuck in Life? Here's How I'd Run a Life Audit to Work Out What Needs to Change" for tips on how to go about it.

Is it true? Or is it just a story you like to tell yourself?

Winter has a habit of showing you which of last year's seeds didn't take.

I've been watching things I genuinely wanted to grow simply not sprout the way I'd hoped. The soil not yet rich enough yet, the timing not quite right.

And meeting the reality that no amount of frustration will change it. What has helped however, has been intentionally replenishing rather than forcing, resting rather than pushing, and trying to meet disappointment with compassion rather than anger.

There's a real grief in a seed that doesn't sprout, and we can argue, judge, criticise and wish it was different. Or we can feel all the feels and come back to sit with the seed, see if it is still something that is for you, reaping the lessons and going back to the drawing board to see what it needs to be nourished and nurtured. And maybe even realising it wasn't the seed that needed to be nurtured, but maybe it was you.

As this Winter closes out, a genuinely useful question before the next season picks up pace.

What actually happened the last time you didn't slow down when your energy clearly wanted you to?

Did the quality of your work drop?
Did you get sick?
Did something in your own life quietly go unattended while you kept pushing through?

That's not a mistake to feel bad about. It's data. Self mastery is largely the skill of actually using it next time, instead of repeating the same pattern out of habit.

What's this Winter taught you that you don't want to relearn next year?

There was a sound I started to notice earlier this year... Not a sigh or a complaint but a low, worn-down tone. A tell-tale sign that there was not enough fuel in my inner reserves.

There's an old name for it in Chinese medicine... Groaning. The sound of something stretched past its capacity.

If you too have noticed the moaning and groaning, maybe it's time to check your own inner reserves, self care practices and reflect on what you need moving into the Spring, so next Winter you have the reserves you need.

Such a delight to be invited onto with Victoria Vanstone to talk all things seasonal living.

Turns out ten minutes is nowhere near enough time to talk about something I've been quietly fascinated by for years!

I particularly loved Vic's description of how she knows the seasons are changing: beach weather, plums are back and, perhaps the most Australian seasonal marker of all, it's hot enough to burn your bum on the car seat. Hahaha... we've all been there!

Seasonal living doesn't have to be mystical or complicated. So much of it is simply noticing.

What's changing around me?
What's changing within me?
What's happening in my life?

And what might I learn about myself when I start noticing the relationship between all three?

Our little 10-minute chat made me realise how much more I wanted to say about this, so I've written the long version - how seasonal living found me, what I've learned from tracking my own patterns, the rituals that have stuck (and the ones that haven't), burnout, winter, beach camping, nature, family traditions and why I'm becoming less interested in constantly optimising myself and much more interested in learning how to work with myself.

You can listen to my chat with Vic on Sober Awkward followed by a deeper dive with Kate Baily from .midlife or settle in with a cuppa for the full essay on the blog.

We're expected to run at roughly the same output all year, and when our own energy dips the way every living thing's does, it's easy to read that as a personal failing rather than a season.

You're not a machine that should hold one constant setting. You're closer to a tide, or a garden, or, if you'd rather a less flattering comparison, that temperamental indoor plant that you just haven't worked out what it needs yet.

If this has been you this winter, you may like to check out one of my Winter blogs https://link.msgsndr.com/sp/c82603bd991

Wintering is a natural response to the quieter rhythm of Winter. Learn why you feel more tired, withdrawn or reflective, and when it's more than the season.

A morning kiss on the way out the door can be either one of routine or ritual - what decides it isn't necessarily the kiss itself.

Done on autopilot, half a second, phone in hand, already thinking about the day ahead, that's routine. You complete the task but it doesn't really ask anything of you.

But, if you add a few extra seconds, a specific phrase you always say, actual eye contact... then that same physical action can become something else entirely. Not because the kiss changed but something unnecessary and specific got added to it - the juiciness, the intention, the anticipation of it, the meaning and connection behind it.

Here's the test. Take away the extra part. Would you actually miss it, or would you barely notice it was gone?

Where in your own day is a routine quietly waiting to become a ritual? Or where has once a ritual lost the meaning and connection and become something you do on autopilot?

Rituals don't have to be big or fancy... a simple ritual I am currently enjoying is opening all the doors and windows and letting fresh air through our home, knowing that spring is coming, the sunshine is out and the days that are warm enough to do this feels like bliss. The joys knowing my favourite season is almost here. The anticipation of spring... I can feel it in my bones. Doing this with intention is one of the most nourishing things at the time of year when I'm ready for the cold to end.
