Does your lead arm drop every time you take a breath? Here are 5 reasons why

1. You lift your head to breathe
Lifting your head or looking too far forward/back throws off alignment. That forces the arm to press down just to keep you up.

2. Over-rotation
Rotating too far (close to 90°) puts the shoulder in a weak position.

3. Hand entry
Entering elbow-first or overreaching above the water leaves no room to extend forward underwater so the arm drops.

4. You finish the stroke too early
If you take your hand out before it passes your hip, you miss the last part of the push. That push helps keep your body moving forward. Without it, your front arm struggles to stay up and starts to drop.

5. Your catch starts in a weak position
If your wrist or elbow drops when your arm is out in front, it can’t hold steady. So when you turn to breathe, the arm gives way and falls instead of staying extended.

Knowing why your arm drops is the first step. Learning how to fix it is the next.

If you can’t feel the water on your fingertips, your catch might need work.

As you set your catch, aim to feel the water brushing over your knuckles.

This helps you get a better feel for the water before you start pulling.

Describe this swim stroke in one word 👇

Are you entering the water correctly in freestyle?

A good fingertips-first entry can help reduce bubbles and turbulence, setting you up for a more effective catch.

A simple way to develop this is to hold the back of a kickboard and practise a one-arm freestyle drill.

The kickboard forces you to enter early enough because if you overreach, you'll hit it. It's a great way to dial in your hand entry position!
