MORGAN LE FAY — A CHARACTER IN TRANSFORMATION

Morgan le Fay is one of the most difficult figures in Arthurian literature to define because there is no single, original “Morgan le Fay” story.

Her character develops gradually across medieval texts, and her role changes considerably from one work to another.

One of the earliest important appearances is in Geoffrey of Monmouth's Vita Merlini, written around the middle of the twelfth century. There she appears as Morgen, the foremost of nine sisters who inhabit the Insula Pomorum — the “Island of Apples,” identified with Avalon. She is described as possessing exceptional healing abilities and as being capable of changing her form. Most importantly, she is the woman who receives the wounded Arthur and undertakes to heal him.

This is notably different from the Morgan familiar from many later retellings.

As Arthurian romance developed, Morgan increasingly became associated with sorcery, sexual intrigue, hostility toward Arthur and opposition to the court. In some traditions she is Arthur's half-sister, while later literature sometimes conflates her with Morgause, another figure entirely.

Her relationship with Avalon is also older than many modern depictions suggest.

Geoffrey's Historia regum Britanniae, composed around 1136, is among the earliest surviving texts to place Avalon within Arthur's story. Arthur is taken there after his final battle to have his wounds treated. In the later Vita Merlini, Avalon becomes the Island of Apples, ruled by nine supernatural women, with Morgen as their leader.

This makes Morgan particularly interesting as a figure of literary transformation.

The healer of Avalon gradually becomes the enchantress of medieval romance.

The woman associated with Arthur's recovery becomes, in many later works, one of his most persistent adversaries.

And the medieval tradition never settles on one definitive version of her.

Rather than asking whether Morgan le Fay was “good” or “evil,” it may be more useful to ask how different medieval authors wanted her to function within the Arthurian world.

Her shifting character reflects the changing concerns of the literature itself, from the supernatural and healing of the early Arthurian tradition to the courtly, moral and political conflicts of later romance.

Morgan le Fay was never simply one character. She was a character continually being rewritten.

ARADIA — THE “MESSIAH” OF THE WITCHES

Aradia is often described as an ancient Italian goddess or the legendary “Queen of Witches.”

The historical evidence is considerably more complicated.

The figure of Aradia is best known from Charles Godfrey Leland's Aradia, or the Gospel of the Witches, published in 1899. Leland claimed that the book was based on material given to him by an Italian woman he called Maddalena, including a manuscript known as the Vangelo. He presented this material as evidence of a surviving tradition of Italian witchcraft.

In Leland's account, Diana is the supreme goddess, while Aradia is her daughter. Diana sends Aradia to Earth to teach witchcraft to oppressed people, particularly those suffering under social and religious authority. Aradia therefore functions less as a conventional goddess than as a teacher and liberating figure within Leland's narrative.

There is, however, an important historical qualification.

Leland's claim that Aradia preserved an ancient, organized Italian witch religion has never been established conclusively. Scholars have questioned how much of the material came from genuine Italian folklore, how much was transmitted or transformed by Leland's informant, and how much may reflect Leland's own interpretations and literary reconstruction.

The name itself is also significant. Leland explicitly connected Aradia with Herodias, a figure who appears in medieval Christian traditions concerning women who supposedly gathered at night with supernatural beings. In his interpretation, Herodias and Diana became associated with witchcraft.

Whatever its origins, Aradia became extremely influential.

Published at the end of the nineteenth century, the book later became an important source for **modern witchcraft and neopagan traditions**, particularly during the twentieth-century revival of witchcraft.

So Aradia occupies an unusual position in the study of folklore:

**She is simultaneously a figure presented as folklore, a product of a disputed nineteenth-century ethnographic account, and an influential figure in modern witchcraft.**

That distinction matters.

Aradia is fascinating not simply because of what she may represent in Italian folklore, but because her story demonstrates how folklore, scholarship, literary creation and modern religious movements can become intertwined.
