Three years ago, if someone had told us we’d one day be travelling to Finland so Mark could represent Australia in wheelchair curling, we would never have believed them.

Back then, we were simply hoping he’d make it home from hospital. Every day felt uncertain, and recovery seemed impossible to measure. It wasn’t the big milestones that changed our lives—it was the hundreds of tiny moments that quietly added up over time.

One of the biggest lessons we’ve learnt is that recovery isn’t always about walking again. Sometimes it’s about rebuilding confidence, rediscovering purpose and finding joy in a life that looks different from the one you imagined.

If you’re living with a spinal cord injury, or supporting someone who is, we hope our story reminds you that progress is often happening even when you can’t see it—and that there is still hope, purpose and a meaningful life ahead.

When Brooke developed Functional Neurological Disorder, her world changed in a matter of days. Suddenly she was navigating weakness, seizures, fatigue and uncertainty, while trying to understand a condition that many people have never even heard of.

Brooke shares what she has learnt about resilience, rehabilitation and finding a new way forward.

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with FND or you’re supporting someone who has we hope her story reminds you that you’re not alone.

When my husband sustained a spinal cord injury, we thought the hardest part would be surviving the injury.

We were wrong.

The hardest part was coming home.

Trying to understand pressure injuries, autonomic dysreflexia, equipment, funding, fatigue, rehabilitation and how to rebuild a life that looked completely different from the one we’d planned.

That experience changed us forever.

It also became the reason One 3 Care exists.

Today, we support people living with spinal cord injury and other neurological conditions with occupational therapy grounded in both clinical expertise and lived experience.

If you’re navigating life after a spinal cord injury, we hope this story reminds you that while life may look different, meaningful recovery is still possible.

What causes Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)?

One of the first questions people ask after being diagnosed is:

“Why did this happen to me?”

The truth is, there usually isn’t one simple answer.

Rather than being caused by a single event, FND is often the result of a combination of factors that affect how the nervous system functions. Researchers sometimes describe it as a “perfect storm”where different life experiences, health conditions and triggers come together.

Understanding these factors is important because it doesn’t just explain why symptoms may have developed, it also helps guide recovery.

In this carousel, we’ll explore:
Why FND isn’t caused by brain damage
What “predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating” factors mean
Why recovery is best supported by a multidisciplinary team

The more we understand the nervous system, the better equipped we are to support meaningful recovery.

Recovery starts with understanding.

If you found this helpful, save this post for later or share it with someone who may benefit.

Can FND be cured?

It’s one of the first questions people ask after being diagnosed.

The answer isn’t simply yes or no.

Many people with Functional Neurological Disorder improve significantly, and some recover completely. While there isn’t a single treatment or medication that “cures” FND, research shows that recovery is possible with the right support and rehabilitation.

The most important thing to know is this:

Your nervous system isn’t broken. It can change, adapt and learn.

Swipe through to learn:
•Why recovery looks different for everyone
•What actually helps
•Why setbacks don’t mean you’ve failed
•How our 14-week Occupational Therapy program supports recovery

At One 3 Care, we believe recovery begins with understanding.

If you or someone you care about has been diagnosed with FND, we’d love to help.

What Every GP Needs to Know About Functional Neurological Disorder

People with FND often wait years for a diagnosis and appropriate support. This evidence-based guide helps GPs recognise FND, understand current best practice, and know when to refer for rehabilitation.

Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is one of the most common conditions seen in neurology clinics, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare estimates that around 21,500 Australians are living with FND. Yet for many people living with FND , t

Thought this was important for any family members here who may be supporting a loved one with a chronic condition.

Being shut out by someone you care about can feel confusing and hurtful. But often, it's not about you, it's about what they're going through.

Instead of trying to force the conversation or fix whatever they're going through, stay close, stay patient, and let them know the door's still open.

And remember, you don't have to do it alone. A mutual friend checking in too can take the pressure off both of you.

I used to wonder if those words were a little clichĂŠ.
Today I realised they are totally valid!

At our FND peer support group, one woman shared that she’d been living with FND for 8 years before finally receiving a diagnosis.

Eight years of being dismissed.
Eight years of being “gaslit”

She told us that today was the first time she’d truly felt seen, heard and validated.

That hit me hard.

No one should have to wait eight years to feel believed.

It reminded me that sometimes the greatest gift we can offer someone isn’t advice or solutions...

It’s simply saying,
“I hear you and I see you.”

💜 If you’ve ever felt dismissed, misunderstood, or like no one believed what you were going through, I’d love to know:

What was the moment that finally made you feel seen?

Or if you’re still waiting for that moment, know that you’re welcome here.
