As Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month comes to an end, these are five things I’d like more people to know.

There are five main gynaecological cancers: uterine, ovarian, cervical, v***al and vaginal.

Cervical screening is incredibly important, but it only screens for cervical cancer. There is no single screening test that can rule out all five.

That’s why knowing what is normal for your body matters.

If you notice something new, unusual or persistent, whether that’s abnormal bleeding, persistent bloating, pelvic pain or changes around the v***a, don’t wait until it feels severe to speak with your GP.

September may be over, but awareness shouldn’t be.

Know the Five. Know your normal. Share this with someone who should know too.

Five gynaecological cancers. Five different sets of symptoms.

The numbers may differ, but awareness matters for every one of them.

Swipe to see some of the common symptoms associated with uterine, ovarian, cervical, vaginal and v***al cancers.

Symptoms can overlap with many other conditions and having one does not mean you have cancer. But if something is new, persistent or unusual for you, it’s worth getting checked.

September is Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month. Know the five.

A bit of a pinch myself moment today.

I had Professor Jim Nicklin assisting me in theatre.

Jim is a legend in gynaecological oncology and someone I’ve had enormous respect for throughout my training and career.

It’s not every day you get to operate alongside someone who has contributed so much to the field.

A real privilege, and a pretty special day in theatre.

Know Cervical. 🩷 Cervical cancer is one of Australia’s greatest cancer prevention success stories, but approximately 900 Australians are still diagnosed each year.

More than 90% of cervical cancer cases are linked to persistent HPV infection. Through HPV vaccination and regular cervical screening, many cases can be prevented or detected before cancer develops.

If you are aged 25 to 74 and due or overdue for cervical screening, speak with your GP about your options, including self-collection.

Swipe through for four important facts, and share them with someone you care about.

Could your waiting room or office help more people Know the Five? 💜

In the lead up to World GO Day on 20 September, my team and I have been working on a simple awareness postcard covering the five gynaecological cancers and some of the common symptoms to know. The reverse has a handy symptom checker!

I’d love to get these into waiting rooms & offices across Brisbane and help more people Know the Five.

If you’re a GP, allied health provider, medical practice or simply someone who’d like to increase awareness in their workplace, send us a DM and we’ll make sure some come your way.

I am self funding these postcards so would love to get an idea if they’re a resource people are willing to share!

Know Uterine. It’s gynaecological cancer awareness month and it’s time to Know the Five. Let’s learn a little bit about (aka )

Uterine Cancer is the most common gynae cancer in Australia (and other high income countries) making up 50% of all gynae cancer cases.

The most common symptom: abnormal bleeding 🩸 (especially after menopause) But please don’t ignore abnormal bleeding at any time.

Today is the official start of September, and with that we are kicking off Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month. As with the last few Septembers, I endeavour to bring more awareness to all gynae cancers. If just one person ends the month saying they “know the five” then it’s worth it. Will you join me in spreading the word?
