Step 6: Where Did This Belief Come From?

So far we’ve:

1. Identified the pattern.
2. Noticed what triggers it.
3. Tuned into what happens in the body.
4. Observed our thoughts and feelings.
5. Become curious rather than critical.

Now it’s time to ask:

Where did this belief come from?

Have you ever noticed a voice inside that says:

* “I’m not good enough.”
* “Don’t upset anyone.”
* “I have to do it all myself.”
* “My needs don’t matter.”
* “I have to be strong.”
* “I can’t make mistakes.”

These beliefs rarely appear out of nowhere.

They are often learned through our experiences, families, relationships, school, culture, or the environments we grew up in.

Maybe you learned to stay quiet because speaking up caused conflict.

Maybe you became independent because there was nobody to rely on.

Maybe you became a people-pleaser because approval felt safer than rejection.

At some point, these beliefs probably helped you.

The question is:

* Is this belief still true?
* Is it helping me today?
* What is it costing me to keep believing it?

This step isn’t about blaming others or dwelling on the past.

It’s about understanding how your patterns developed so you can decide whether they still belong in your life.

What protected you then may be limiting you now.

Awareness creates choice.

Behavioural Patterns – Step 5: Be Curious, Not Critical

So far we’ve explored:

Step 1: Notice the pattern.
Step 2: Slow it down.
Step 3: Notice the trigger.
Step 4: Tune into your body.

Step 5: Be Curious, Not Critical

Many of our behaviours developed for a reason. At some point, they helped us cope, stay safe, avoid pain, gain approval, or get a need met.

Instead of asking “What’s wrong with me?” try asking:

• What is this pattern trying to do for me?
• Where did I learn this behaviour?
• What need is underneath it?
• What am I protecting myself from?
• How has this helped me in the past?
• Does it still serve me now?

The goal isn’t to judge the pattern. It’s to understand it.

Understanding creates awareness. Awareness creates choice.

Behavioural Patterns Series – Step 4: Tune Into Your Body

Sometimes we become so focused on what is happening around us that we miss what is happening within us.

Your body is constantly responding to your experiences. It might tighten, speed up, shut down, feel restless, or become heavy. These responses often happen automatically, before we have even had time to think about them.

Learning to tune into your body is not about analysing or fixing anything. It is about noticing. Noticing what happens when you feel criticised. Noticing what happens when you are anxious, overwhelmed, excited, or disconnected.

The body can tell us when something feels unsafe, when a boundary has been crossed, when we need rest, or when something is deeply important to us.

The more familiar you become with your body’s signals, the easier it becomes to recognise old patterns as they emerge and create space for something different.

What is your body trying to tell you today?

If you would like to explore your patterns with curiosity and awareness, reach out.

Behavioural Patterns Series – Step 4: Tune Into Your Body

Many of us have become skilled at explaining our experiences, analysing situations, and trying to think our way through difficult moments. But often our body is already telling us something long before our mind catches up.

When a familiar behavioural pattern shows up, take a moment to notice what is happening in your body. Is there tension in your shoulders? A knot in your stomach? A tight chest? A racing heart? A sense of heaviness or restlessness?

These sensations are not problems to get rid of. They are valuable pieces of information. They can offer clues about your emotions, needs, boundaries, fears, and what matters to you.

The goal is not to change what you are feeling, but to become aware of it. Awareness is often the first step towards choice.

What does your body notice when your pattern shows up?

Behavioural Patterns Series – Step 4: Tune Into Your Body

Once you have noticed the pattern, slowed things down, and identified the trigger, the next step is to tune into your body.

Our body often notices things before our mind does. Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, a racing heart, a knot in the stomach, feeling heavy, restless, numb, or wanting to escape can all be important information.

Rather than immediately trying to change what you are feeling, see if you can simply notice it. What sensations are present? Where do you feel them? Do they change when you pay attention to them?

Many of us have learned to live in our heads, analysing and thinking our way through life. But our body holds valuable clues about what is happening beneath the surface.

The more we learn to listen to our body, the easier it becomes to recognise patterns, understand our needs, and make choices that are more aligned with who we are.

Anxiety is often treated as something to get rid of.

But what if it is not the enemy?

What if anxiety is information? A signal that something feels important, uncertain, meaningful, or in need of your attention.

Rather than asking, “How do I make this go away?”, try asking, “What is this trying to tell me?”

When we become curious about anxiety instead of fighting it, we often discover it has been trying to protect us all along.

If you would like to explore your relationship with anxiety and learn how to work with it differently, feel free to reach out. I’d be happy to have a conversation about how therapy might support you.

Behavioural patterns step 3 - triggers

Triggers are the moments, situations, people, thoughts, or feelings that can set something off in us. They are often not as obvious as we think. Sometimes they look like irritability, overthinking, shutting down, people pleasing, tension in the body, or reacting in ways that do not quite feel like us.

The thing about triggers is they are not the problem. They are information. They can gently point us towards something important, whether that is stress, unmet needs, old experiences, exhaustion, fear, or boundaries being crossed.

A good place to start is simply noticing. What happens in your body? What thoughts appear? What emotions show up? What situations seem to repeat?

Awareness creates choice, and choice creates freedom.

If this resonates or you have any questions, feel free to reach out. I am always happy to have a conversation.

Behavioural Patterns: Step 3 – Notice the Trigger

Before we can change a behavioural pattern, we first need to notice what sets it in motion.

A trigger is the thing that activates a response in us. It might be a person, a situation, a memory, a tone of voice, conflict, criticism, rejection, uncertainty, feeling left out, feeling unsafe, or even feeling unseen. Sometimes triggers are obvious, and other times they are subtle and happen so quickly we barely notice them.

Triggers are important because they can shift us into “automatic mode.” You may suddenly feel anxious, angry, withdrawn, overwhelmed, defensive, people pleasing, reactive, or shut down. Your body might tighten, your heart may race, your stomach may churn, your breathing may change, or you may feel exhausted, tense, or restless. This is your nervous system responding, often trying to protect you.

The thing about triggers is they are often less about what is happening right now and more about what the situation means to us, or reminds us of. Sometimes they tap into old experiences, fears, unmet needs, or deeply held beliefs such as “I’m not enough,” “I’m too much,” “I’ll be rejected,” or “I have to keep the peace.”

The goal is not to stop being triggered. We are human and triggers are part of life. The goal is awareness.

Start becoming curious:

• What situation, person, feeling, or environment tends to set me off?• What do I notice happening in my body?• What thoughts show up in my mind?• What do I automatically want to do? Withdraw? Defend? Please? Avoid? Overthink?

The more awareness we build around our triggers, the more choice we begin to have. And choice is where change starts.
