Ollie's Echo: Pathways to Prevention Ltd Ollie’s story highlights the silent struggles of boys with eating disorders—an often overlooked and under-supported group. But our work doesn’t stop there.

Today, on World Mental Health Day, I’m sharing something deeply personal but also something I believe has the power to create change.

This year’s theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” speaks directly to why Ollie's Echo: Pathways to Prevention Ltd exists. Lived experience must be more than a story we listen to after something has gone terribly wrong. We need to listen, learn and use those voices to help change what happens before another young person reaches crisis.
Real voices must lead to real change. And prevention must start earlier.

For our Mental Health Month campaign, we’ve been talking about the small things each of us can do to help build stronger, safer and more connected communities. Sometimes, one of the most powerful is also one of the simplest: ask the second question.

“I’m fine” or “I’m good” can be an automatic response even when someone is anything but. We don’t need to have the answers or know how to fix what someone is going through. Sometimes we just need to notice, ask again, listen without judgement, and make it clear that the door is open when they’re ready to talk.

Notice. Ask. Listen. Stay connected.

𝐆𝐎 𝐒𝐇𝐀𝐔𝐍!

When Shaun Miller contacted me earlier this year and told me that hearing Ollie’s story had inspired him to do something a little bit crazy, I certainly wasn’t expecting this!

At 56 years young, Shaun has signed up to take on the Noosa Triathlon on 1 November, and he’s chosen to use the challenge to raise funds for Ollie's Echo: Pathways to Prevention Ltd.

And he’s already raised an incredible $4,261.82 towards his $20,000 goal!

Every dollar Shaun raises will help Ollie’s Echo continue our prevention and early-intervention work with young people, families, schools and communities, starting conversations around eating disorders, body image, online harm, bullying, social media pressures, mental fitness and the power of words.

Shaun, we are so incredibly grateful to have you in our corner. Taking on a swim, ride and run is a huge commitment and knowing you’re doing it with Ollie and our work in mind makes it even more special.

There’s still a way to go before 1 November, so we’d love our Ollie’s Echo community to get behind Shaun and help us turn that thermometer RED! 🔥

$4,261.82 raised. $20,000 target. Let’s get Shaun there.

And here we are… Golf Day week is finally here! ⛳️

We’re so excited to welcome everyone to the 2026 Ollie’s Echo Charity Golf Day this Friday and this year there’s an extra bit of fun on the course. Keep an eye out for our special guest Mick McLoughlin, who’ll be running Golf Poker on a Par 3… and yes, even if you’ve gone ALL IN, Mick may still find a way to sting you with a penalty or two! 😂

It’s going to be a brilliant day and we can’t wait to see you all there.

Words matter. More than we sometimes realise.

A comment about someone’s body, weight or what they’re eating might feel harmless in the moment but we rarely know what is happening beneath the surface. For a young person struggling with body image, food, self-worth or simply trying to work out where they belong, those words can stay with them for a very long time.

But words can also make someone feel seen, safe and less alone. During Mental Health Month, perhaps we can all think a little more carefully about the words we choose because we may not know what someone is carrying, but we can choose not to make that load heavier.

As Queensland Mental Health Week begins, this year’s theme 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝 𝐖𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 is a powerful reminder that mental fitness and wellbeing are shaped by the people, places and communities around us.

At Ollie's Echo: Pathways to Prevention Ltd, we believe that’s also where prevention begins. In our homes, classrooms, sporting clubs, friendship groups, workplaces and online spaces. In the words we use, the things we notice and the connections we build before someone reaches crisis. Because prevention isn’t clinical. It is cultural. And every one of us has a role to play.

A smile can mean so many things. 😊

It can be a moment of joy, a way of connecting or a small act of kindness that changes someone’s day. But a smile doesn’t always mean someone is okay. Sometimes the people carrying the heaviest things become very good at smiling through them.

As we begin Mental Health Month, Ollie’s Echo will be sharing a series of conversations throughout October about the things that sit at the heart of prevention.... kindness, connection, the power of our words, eating disorders and body image, social media and online pressures, mental fitness and su***de prevention.

Because prevention doesn’t begin at crisis point. It begins much earlier, in the way we speak to one another, the things we notice, the questions we ask, and the environments we create around our young people.

So on World Smile Day, share the smile. But perhaps go one step further. Ask the extra question. Send the message. Check in with someone you haven’t heard from. And if they tell you they’re fine, care enough to notice when they might not be.

Kindness is prevention. Words matter. Connection matters. ❤️

I was very proud to play a small part in helping shape the Fewer Screens More Learning petition because this is a conversation we urgently need to be having.

Technology absolutely has a place in education, but a screen should be used because it genuinely improves learning, not simply because it has become the default.

Through my work with Ollie's Echo: Pathways to Prevention Ltd, I spend a lot of time talking about the environments we are creating around our children. Their attention, wellbeing, relationships and development matter, and schools have such an important opportunity to protect the spaces where young people can think deeply, read, write, talk, create and connect with one another.

This isn’t about removing technology. It’s about using it intentionally.

Really proud to stand alongside The Heads Up Alliance and so many parents, educators and advocates asking us to rethink what has quietly become normal. ❤️
