Is it more motivation you need, or a plan?

Most of us know the feeling of wanting more from our career, then finishing a run of shifts with no time to work out what “more” actually looks like.

Motivation gets you scrolling job ads on a day off. A plan is different. It tells you which role you’re aiming for, what experience gets you there, and what to do this month.

Most nurses aren’t short on drive. They’re short on structure.

A next step could be a CNC role, education, postgrad study, a move into leadership or a new specialty. The hard part is choosing one and building toward it while you’re still working full rosters.

That doubt hits in the first weeks as a new NUM or team leader, but those two are not the same thing.

Not ready would mean something’s missing in you. Never taught is different. You were great at the bedside, then got handed rosters, staffing and compliance, and nobody showed you the people side.

Not enough experience, or not enough of it on paper?

They feel the same when the "unfortunately" email lands, but they're not the same thing.

Not enough experience usually means you need more time. Not enough of it on paper is different. Another year on the ward helps, then you apply again and the same email comes back.

Sometimes it isn't your experience holding you back. It's the application.

Your experience covers more than most of us give it credit for. Precepting, leading shifts, quality projects, the deteriorating patient you caught early. The hard part is writing it so a panel sees the nurse you already are.

You already have the experience. Your application just needs to show it.

Most of the nurses and midwives we work with aren't short on experience. They've led shifts, supported new grads, handled the hard conversations and stepped up when the ward needed it. But on paper, it comes out as a list of duties.

A selection panel can only go on what's in front of them. If your best work isn't in your application, they don't see it.

That's what a Personal Application Review is for. A senior nurse goes through your application with you, finds the experience you've been underselling, and helps you put it into words that answer the selection criteria.
