"I don't know how to get them to talk anymore."
It's one of the things we hear most often from parents.
The reality is, many young people desperately want to communicate what they're experiencing - but distress, anxiety, trauma or overwhelm can make finding the words incredibly difficult.
Research shared in our Speaking Their Language workshop co-design found many young people stayed silent because they were trying to protect the people they loved, worried they'd be misunderstood, or simply couldn't explain what was happening inside.
The good news?
Small changes in how we listen can make an enormous difference.
๐Ÿ’œ Listening without judgement.
๐Ÿ’œ Making time.
๐Ÿ’œ Being patient.
๐Ÿ’œ Helping young people feel understood.
If conversations at home have started feeling harder lately, you're not alone.
Our FREE Speaking Their Language workshop explores practical, lived-experience strategies to help parents, carers, families and kin better understand what's happening beneath the silence and build stronger communication with the young people in their lives.
๐Ÿ“ Free | Peer-led | Available online and in person during August 2026. Visit https://rir.raisingminds.org.au/speaking-their-language/ to claim your free ticket.

Sometimes it's not that they won't talk. It's that they can't find the words. ๐Ÿ’™
When a young person is experiencing anxiety, trauma, overwhelm or emotional distress, communication can become one of the hardest parts - for them and for the people who love them.
If you've ever found yourself wondering...

๐Ÿ’ญ "How do I get through to them?"
๐Ÿ’ญ "Why do they shut down?"
๐Ÿ’ญ "Am I saying the wrong thing?"..you're not alone.

Our free Speaking Their Language workshops are designed by people with lived experience to help parents, carers, families and kin better understand what's happening beneath the silence.

Together we'll explore:
โœ” Why communication becomes difficult during mental health challenges
โœ” Practical ways to reduce conflict and strengthen connection
โœ” Strategies that help young people feel heard, understood and supported
โœ” A welcoming space to connect with other families who truly get it

๐Ÿ“ Join us online or in person throughout August.

๐Ÿซถ Join us at 10am Tuesday 4th August in Milton, Brisbane! ๐Ÿซถ
Young people have their own internal challenges, and the mental health and education systems designed to support them donโ€™t always listen or provide neurodivergent-friendly spaces.
They are often in โ€˜survival brainโ€™ mode, limiting their engagement with people and services.
This peer-led workshop will provide attendees with practical skills, knowledge, and resources to ease the tension and build a better understanding around communicating with young people. You will meet other parents, families, carers and kin who are all facing similar experiences.

Sometimes, the mental clutter of trying to digest multiple diagnoses doesn't come neatly ๐Ÿฅฃ๐Ÿ’”
When youโ€™re raising a child with multiple mental health challenges, the labels can start to feel completely overwhelming. You might find yourself staring at reports, trying to make sense of ADHD, ASD, ODD, and OCD all at once. It's a daily battle trying to understand which aspect of their neurodivergence is making them experience the world a certain way.
If your 'manual' has a whole index of labels that oversimplify your experience, know this: we get it. Whether you are looking to join a supportive group, or explore our educational workshops and free resources, the Resilience in Reach program offers you peer-led options and real-life understanding.
