Myth: People managing mental health conditions should be cautious about introducing exercise.
Truth: For most mental health presentations, structured exercise is one of the most robust and evidence-based interventions available.
The mechanism is not motivational. It is biological.
Exercise increases BDNF, a protein that supports neural growth and function. It improves monoamine neurotransmitter availability. It reduces HPA axis dysregulation. It lowers resting cortisol. And it improves sleep architecture, one of the most powerful recovery inputs of all.
The key clinical variable is how exercise is prescribed. Too much intensity in anxious presentations can acutely worsen symptoms. Too little in depressive presentations fails to cross the threshold for neurobiological effect.
An Accredited Exercise Physiologist prescribes exercise for mental health conditions the way a pharmacist fills a prescription. The dose, the timing, the progression, and the contraindications all matter.
