SENSORY ENCODING: VESTIBULAR SPECIFIC
"Seeking to spin without dizziness"
It is not random. It is communication. It is connection.
James spins. In circles, on chairs, in open spaces, on playground equipment, in the middle of the living room. And the thing that has always struck me is the expression on his face when he does it. Not dizzy. Not distressed. Calm. Focused. Almost transported.
And that tells me everything I need to know.
He is not trying to get dizzy. He is seeking exactly the right amount of vestibular input to feel organised, alert and regulated. And his vestibular system, the system in his inner ears that processes movement, balance and where his body is in space, processes spinning differently from most people. It needs more. It tolerates more. And when it gets what it is asking for, his brain feels better. Calmer. More in control. More able to function.
Spinning provides strong vestibular input that helps the brain feel organised, calm and focused. It helps the body and emotions regulate. It gives a deep sensory input that a under-seeking vestibular system is looking for. It feels good and calming at the same time. And it gives James a sense of control in a world where so much feels unpredictable and hard to manage.
He is not trying to cause chaos. He is trying to function.
The benefits of the right amount of spinning are genuine and documented. It helps organise and regulate the brain. Improves mood and reduces stress. Supports focus and attention. Builds balance and body awareness. Provides a sense of safety and control. Boosts energy and alertness. Supports emotional release and wellbeing. Helps the brain process sensory information more effectively.
All of that from spinning. Which is why stopping it without understanding it and replacing the need safely is not a solution. It is a removal of a regulatory tool that was doing real neurological work.
But there is an important nuance here too. Too much input can feel just as bad as not enough. Complaints of dizziness or nausea, looking pale or distressed, becoming unsteady or wobbly, headaches, irritability or upset after spinning, needing to stop but being unable to, all of these are signals that the vestibular system has received more than it needed. The goal is not no spinning. The goal is healthy, safe, just-right spinning.

When a child spins, their brain is utilizing movement as a biological organizer:
Wakes up the nervous system: It directly helps their brain feel alert and awake.

Spinning in circles inside the house or outside in open spaces.
Twisting, turning, or mechanically rotating their entire body.
Spinning deliberately on office chairs, swivel seats, or stools.
Twirling or dancing rhythmically across the floor.
Actively seeking out specific movement toys, playground spinners, and roundabouts.
Rocking and spinning in unique physical combinations.
Spinning for significantly longer periods of time than other children without showing distress.
Seeking out spinning movement specifically when feeling stressed, tired, or overwhelmed.

When accessed safely, controlled rotation provides profound neurological support:
Brain organization: Helps organize and actively regulate the brain.
Stress reduction: Significantly improves mood and naturally reduces internal stress.
Focus and attention: Supports cognitive focus, attention span, and processing capabilities.
Physical coordination: Builds baseline physical balance and deep body awareness.
Emotional release: Supports emotional release, physical expression, and overall wellbeing.
Sensory processing: Actively helps their brain process background sensory information smoothly.
⚠️ SIGNALS IT MIGHT BE TOO MUCH
Too much input can feel just as bad as not enough. Watch for these signs that their system is becoming overloaded:
🤢 Complaints of dizziness or nausea.
😟 Looking pale, flushed, or visibly distressed.
🥴 Becoming physically unsteady, clumsy, or wobbly on their feet.
🤕 Onset of a headache.
🛑 Showing a need to stop but appearing unable to break the loop (looking overwhelmed).
⚡ Becoming highly irritable, angry, or upset immediately after spinning.
🛠️ HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT: SAFE REGULATION
1. Provide safe ways to spin daily. Give them designated, secure spaces where they can rotate without risk of hitting sharp edges.
2. Let them take movement breaks. Anticipate their needs by building spinning opportunities directly into transition times or study periods.
3. Offer equipment that allows controlled spinning. Introduce tools like sit and spins, swivel chairs, or playground roundabouts to keep the movement structured.
4. Watch closely for signs of too much input. Step in to guide them to a calm activity if you notice wobbliness, paleness, or irritability.
5. Help them build internal body awareness. Talk about how their body feels before, during, and after movement to help them map out their "just right" limit.
6. Prioritize safety, choice, and understanding. Combining these values leads directly to long term regulation and emotional wellbeing.
He's not giving us a hard time. He's having a hard time. 💙
What This Means for Parents and Carers
We used to constantly panic and tell James to stop spinning because we thought he would hurt himself or make himself sick. Once we learned his brain was utilizing that rotation to feel alert and calm, we stopped fighting it. We bought a heavy duty sensory swivel seat, cleared out a wide perimeter away from furniture walls, and now we let him spin safely whenever he feels tired or stressed. The constant edge in his behavior has smoothed out beautifully.

Spinning is a legitimate neurological regulatory strategy, not a behavioral distraction or an act of defiance. Expecting an under-seeking student to sit perfectly still for hours without access to vestibular input forces their brain into a low arousal, disorganized state.
