Today, while my brave and passionate comrades flew in from all over the country at the last minute to present their submissions in person in Melbourne, despite battling accessibility barriers at every turn, I was attending an information session run by the amazing Sam from The Growing Space.

There was SOOOO much information covered, but two things really stood out to me!

The first was that evidence is going to matter more than ever. Whether we like it or not, the NDIA is increasingly expecting people to demonstrate not only what supports they receive, but why those supports are needed and what role they play in a person’s life.

Reports, assessments, support logs, shift notes, examples of barriers, examples of risks, and examples of what happens when supports aren’t there are all becoming increasingly important. For support workers, this means moving beyond simply documenting that community access occurred and instead demonstrating what support was actually provided, what barriers existed, how those barriers were addressed, and what outcomes were achieved.

Good evidence may become one of the strongest protections participants have.

The second was that many of the changes people are hearing about are still proposed changes. There is a lot of fear, uncertainty and misinformation circulating throughout the disability community right now, and understandably so.

However, many of the reforms being discussed are still contained within legislation that has not yet passed Parliament. The outcome is not yet final. Advocacy matters. The thousands of submissions matter. The people who travelled across the country to speak today matter. Every person writing to MPs, speaking to the media, sharing their story, attending forums, and refusing to be silent matters!

My biggest takeaway from today wasn’t panic. It was preparation.

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER!

Know your rights. Keep good records. Gather evidence. Stay informed. And keep advocating.

Because people with disability should not have to constantly prove their humanity, their support needs, or their right to participate in their communities 💜
