I am entering my fourth decade of life - the so called mid-life point. Lol. Really, it’s just a reminder that life is temporary and death is getting closer. Usually, people hate talking about death. But when I look in the mirror, I see a depth in my eyes from a life fully lived. Thinking about death doesn’t bring me pain; it just brings back a flood of a huge, beautiful life. I look back and see a mosaic of so many countries, cultures and people that have shaped this illusory “me”.
I remember dancing with locals to traditional music in the Greek Islands, walking among the ancient pyramids of Mexico and Egypt, and hiking through massive waterfalls in the National Parks of the USA. I think of the pure joy of exploring the lush green forests and swimming in the bright blue sea in Jamaica, witnessing the profound faith and hearing the prayers of Islam and Hinduism in Indonesia, and sharing the simple warmth of drinking kava with strangers in a local market in Fiji. There were months spent in deep silence, meditating in Canada, New Zealand, Vietnam, and France.
I remember flying in a hot air balloon, drifting through different skies—over the wild rock formations of Cappadocia, above snowy mountains and pine trees in New Zealand, and watching sunrises over the ocean and macadamia trees in Australia. There were road trips along the French and Spanish coasts, eating the best food in Italy while spending Christmas with loved ones tucked away in the Alps. The adrenaline of motorbiking through Laos and Vietnam, and training martial arts in China. When I think about getting older, I remember losing all sense of time and space while scuba diving with a whale shark in Thailand—the closest I’ve ever felt to “God”.
