✨ The focus of World Breastfeeding Week this year is on nutrition, food security and poverty reduction.

✨This is relevant even in a first world country like Australia and becoming more so every day.

✨The aim is to look globally and strengthen what works and look for areas for improvement.

✨ What part can you play to support families and create a sustainable future for our children and our planet 🌎

Caitlin’s story in her own words shared with many thanks. I’m sure many of you will relate.. 🥰

✨My first birth stripped me bare. I questioned everything I believed about myself and every plan I had laid out ahead. Unresolved emotions rattled me in the early days postpartum.
I had planned a homebirth and then made a pivot in my plans when I went past 42 weeks. I experienced a challenging posterior labour where I demanded an epidural and then gratefully accepted a vacuum and episiotomy after 2.5 hours of pushing (she came out deflexed OP - iykyk). I have no regrets about the decisions I made, as best as I could at the time, but I am sad that my mental state at the time resulted in me making those choices. And then followed a very painful 2 year breastfeeding journey.
Postpartum rebuilt me. Stronger, softer, intuitive, more resilient, more accepting, and an established trust in my body’s abilities.
This journey has felt vastly different. More trust, less attempt to control and decisions made with reverence for my values, not from fear.
My son was again conceived by IVF, I again chose to plan for a homebirth. My pregnancy was uncomplicated. I laboured at 41+6 and birthed at home in water after a 3.5 hour labour. He emerged en caul, a little stunned, but perfect at 4.08kg. I was surrounded by strong women who’s presence i am so grateful for. Unfortunately we had a trip to ED for breathing support 10 hours later which resulted in a 4 day hospital stay. I am navigating the feelings that have resulted from this separation.
My second birth was the culmination of years of growth and healing after my first birth.

✨ This woman had a mantra to get her through hard things in life- ‘confident and capable’
This transition proved just how capable she is and her confidence grew in so many ways
Confidence in her body and its ability to grow and birth a baby.
Confidence in her ability to make decisions that felt right for her.
And now the confidence to take on the role of mother to her beautiful daughter.
All supported by women who absolutely believed in her and gave her the space to feel safe in this knowledge too. 🥰

Unfortunately, ni**le damage can be part of the initiation to breastfeeding..
There are many tools you can use, along with the right clinical support, to help heal this damage and continue on with your feeding journey..
One of these is Low Level Laser Therapy.

💞 I feel so lucky to have been taken to this special place today.
A place where this Mum can pause, be held by the land, soak up the sun and connect with her baby.
Where she can block out the noise and sit in a deep knowing things are as they should be..

💞Today marks the Anniversary of my first birth attendance as an Independent Midwife. I am feeling all the feels…
Don’t quite have words to articulate it so just sitting in gratitude for what I am privileged to witness, this Community that has saved me from deep moral distress and helped me find the midwife I knew I could be and for the incredible relationships I have formed. This is only the beginning 🥰
