COVID hasn’t been all bad for us more isolated practitioners. It’s given us online access to a lot of presenters that we would otherwise have had to travel across the continent or overseas to listen to. Just requires some chocolate and copious amounts of black coffee.

Levers are present all through our bodies. The class 1 lever works like the picture - there is a load at one end, a tilting point (fulcrum) in the middle, and a force at the other end. These can be used to either make the load easier to move, or faster to move. A good example in the human body is our head balancing on top of our spine. Most of the weight sits at the front, the pivot point (fulcrum) is the top of the spine, and the force is applied at the back of the skull by our neck muscles to stop the head from dropping forward.

Who can think of another example of a class one lever in either our bodies or the body of your pet?

“See mum! I told you I was a hooman”
Puppy Lily got her adjustment inside because it was a bit too hot on the patio. Lily’s vet recommended she try some chiropractic and rehab for her limp which the vet suspected was biomechanical in nature. After a few sessions and some great work on the rehab at home with her dedicated owners she was back to normal in no time.

Check out this incredible find! While out on a camping trip with we stumbled upon this big guy. At first we thought this looked like a sacrum, but after some research it turns out whales don’t have a fused, wing-shaped sacrum like ours and quadrupeds.

I wrote to to see if they could help with ID, and their archivist Katelyn got back to me with some detailed information.

I was at the complete wrong end of the whale. Turns out this is part of his skull, and we are viewing it from underneath. So this is essentially the roof of his mouth, and he is missing his lower jaw. And for those astute observers, yes that is indeed spinal cord still attached. We also found a rib poking out of the sand about 100m down the beach, and a perfect vertebra sitting on the sand another few hundred metres down. Katelyn believes that due to the large size and location of the bones he was likely to have been either a Humpback or Southern Right whale.

We dug away enough sand to get some good images but were careful not to disturb his resting place too much. In order to help prevent the illegal trade of wildlife parts it is against the law to remove any parts of a whale from the beach. We were very grateful to this magnificent animal for giving us the opportunity to learn so much about the species in the course of our research.
