My husband came down with a bug this week.

I didn't reach for anything complicated. I walked out to the garden, picked a few handfuls of marigold flower, rosemary, thyme, lemon balm and made him a pot of tea.

It took ten minutes, and it reminded me why I fell in love with plant medicine in the first place. It's not always a protocol or a product. Often it's the simplest form of care there is: someone you love is unwell, so you go outside, gather what's growing, and slow down enough to make something warm.

Women have been doing this for as long as there have been kitchens, gardens and people to look after. Long before it was called naturopathy, it was just called tending.

I think we've made wellness feel more complicated than it needs to be. Sometimes the medicine is a pot, a handful of leaves, hot water and a bit of patience.

What's one plant you grow, or wish you grew, that you reach for when someone at home is under the weather?

Progesterone, which is calming and sleep-supportive, tends to fall and fluctuate in perimenopause. Add stress, blood sugar swings and a busy mind, and the small hours can become a battleground.

It's not a personal failing. It's often a body in transition, and it deserves real support. ๐ŸŒ™

Perimenopause can begin years before periods stop, and the first signs are often not the ones we've been told to look for.

Swipe through for six that women often mention. This isn't a diagnosis. These symptoms can have other causes, so it's always worth having them checked. But knowing what's on the list can be a huge relief. ๐Ÿ‘‰

Before there were clinics, degrees or supplement aisles, there were women who knew which plants eased a labouring body, settled a gut or brought a fever down.

They learned it from their mothers and grandmothers. They tested it on their own families. They passed it on.

That's the root of naturopathic medicine. Not one founder. A lineage.

Hippocrates is often given the credit for the idea that the body can heal itself, and he deserves a place in the story. But he was formalising what healers, many of them women, had practised for generations.

I think about this often in clinic. When a woman tells me, "I just know somethings off in my body," shes drawing on that same source: an embodied wisdom that was once trusted, and then talked over.

Plant medicine, food, rest, ritual, being truly listened to. None of it is new. Its old, and worth reclaiming alongside the best of modern science.

We mark first periods, weddings, births, even retirements.

Menopause โ€” arguably the biggest hormonal and identity shift a woman goes through โ€” usually gets marked with silence, or an apology.

"Sorry, hot flush."

"Sorry, Im not myself."

"Sorry, menopause brain."

Sorry for what, exactly?

For a transition that half the population goes through, and that every single other person has watched a mother, partner, colleague or friend go through too?

What if, instead, this stage was met the way other cultures have met it for centuries โ€” as a woman moving into her most authoritative, most useful, most herself decades?

Not despite the change. Because of it.

Im not asking anyone to pretend the symptoms dont exist, or that the transition isnt hard for many women. It genuinely is, and it deserves real clinical support.

But the meaning we wrap around it โ€” decline versus arrival โ€” that part is still ours to choose.

She was told shed "come out the other side."

Nobody told her what that actually meant.

A client came to see me eighteen months post-menopause. The hot flushes had settled. Her sleep had mostly returned. By every clinical measure, she was "through it."

But she said:

"I dont recognise who I am now. Everyone stopped talking about it, like the hard part was over. But this is when I actually needed to figure out who I am next."

Post-menopause can be a third of a woman's life, and potentially one of its most settled, capable chapters. But after years of poor sleep, stress and depletion, the body is often exhausted.

Before we ask a woman to find her purpose, sometimes we need to help her find her energy.

So, could a herb help? Depending on the whole picture, I might consider nourishing herbs like withania, motherwort or lemon balm, alongside good food, strength, deep rest and connection.

The first step isnt fixing her. Its rest, nourishment, and permission to discover the woman she is becoming.

If youre post-menopausal, did anyone ever talk to you about this chapter, or did the conversation justโ€ฆ stop?

Did you know your gut microbiome helps decide how much oestrogen actually circulates in your body?

There's a specific collection of gut bacteria โ€” nicknamed the "estrobolome" โ€” that processes oestrogen after your liver has broken it down. If that gut ecosystem is out of balance, oestrogen can be reabsorbed instead of cleared, or cleared too efficiently. Either way, your gut health is quietly shaping your hormonal experience of perimenopause.

This is emerging research โ€” not yet a fully settled science โ€” but it's a compelling reason to think about menopause as a whole-body event, not just an ovarian one.

I turned 60 last Sunday, and I have a confession: I genuinely can't decide what to do with my hair. ๐Ÿ˜…

Keep dyeing it? Let it go grey? Will grey age me, or will it just look like me?

After decades of helping women through life's biggest transitions, here I am facing my own small (but not-so-small) one.

Because underneath "should I go grey" is a bigger question: how do I want to meet this next decade? Keep managing how age looks, or let it show, and trust that it's not decline, it's evidence of a life well lived?

Honestly, some days I want the grey. Other days I love my colour. Maybe I don't have to choose forever, maybe I can just choose for now.

To grey, or not to grey? Tell me where you land. ๐Ÿ’œ

Pregnancy can leave behind something extraordinary: a lasting cellular connection between mother and child. ๐Ÿงฌ

Itโ€™s called fetal microchimerism. The presence of a small number of fetal-origin cells in the motherโ€™s body after pregnancy.

Researchers have detected these cells years, and in some cases decades, after pregnancy, including in tissues such as the blood, liver, heart and brain.

But hereโ€™s where the science gets especially interesting:

What are these cells actually doing?

Researchers are still exploring whether fetal microchimeric cells may have roles in tissue repair, immune responses and other biological processes. There is still much we don't know.

What fascinates me is the reminder that the body is not static.

It carries traces of our experiences, our history and the changes we've moved through.

And perhaps that gives us another way to think about the incredible complexity of the female body particularly through the many transitions of midlife.

Swipe through to learn more.
