What if the right support didn't mean doing more for someone but helping them do more for themselves?

For participants, independence can look different for everyone.

It might mean choosing what to eat.
Deciding how to spend the afternoon.
Learning a new skill.
Going out into the community.
Trying something that once felt difficult.

And for families, independence can come with another important hope:

β€œI want them to have freedom but I also want to know they're supported.”

You don't have to choose between the two. πŸ’™

The right support can create room for choice, confidence, safety and growth while keeping the participant at the centre of decisions about their own life.

Because good support isn't about taking control.

It's about helping someone have more control over their own life.

πŸ“Œ Save this if you're exploring support or SIL for yourself or someone you love.

πŸ’™ And if you're not sure where to start, send us a message. You don't need to have all the answersβ€”we can simply start with a conversation.

For many people, feeling understood, heard and connected can make a meaningful difference.

That’s why R U OK?Day is about more than simply asking a question. It’s about creating space for honest conversations, listening without judgement, and reminding the people around us that they don’t have to navigate difficult moments alone.

At Haven Care Australia, we believe meaningful support begins with genuine connection. We take the time to listen, understand each person as an individual, and help them feel valued, heard and empowered.

This R U OK?Day on Thursday, 10th of September, let’s make checking in part of everyday care.

πŸ’¬ Ask how someone is really doing.
πŸ‘‚ Listen to what they have to say.
πŸ’› Remind them they’re not alone.

πŸ‘‰ Who can you check in on today?

Ask. Listen. Connect. πŸ’›

Here's a question we think deserves more attention:

What does a good day look like for YOU? πŸ’™

For one participant, it might mean getting up independently and making breakfast.

For another, it could be going out into the community, seeing a friend, working toward a goal, or simply having the freedom to decide how they spend their day.

And for families, knowing that their loved one is safe, supported and still able to make meaningful choices can make a world of difference.

That's why choosing support shouldn't start with:

❌ β€œWhat services do you offer?”

It can start with:

❀️ β€œWhat matters to you?”

The right support should work around the participant, their goals, preferences, routines, personality and way of life.

Because independence doesn't have to look the same for everyone.

Your good day is your good day. And your support should help make it possible.

πŸ“Œ Save this if you're researching support or SIL.
πŸ’™ Follow Haven Care Australia for practical, participant-centred NDIS information for participants and families.

And if you're thinking about SIL and don't know where to start, send us a message. You don't need to have all the answers, we can start with a conversation.

Sometimes, support starts with simply being there.

You might notice someone seems quieter than usual, a little withdrawn, or just not quite themselves. You don't need to have the perfect words or know exactly how to help, sometimes, simply noticing, asking, listening and staying connected can make a meaningful difference.

πŸ’¬ Notice when something feels different.
πŸ’› Ask how they're really doing.
πŸ‘‚ Listen without judgement.
🫢 Be there and remind them they're not alone.

As we get closer to R U OK?Day on Thursday, 10 September, let's remember that meaningful conversations can happen every day not just once a year.

πŸ‘‰ Who can you check in on today? Reach out, ask the question, and let them know you're there.

You don’t need the perfect words to check in.

Sometimes we hesitate to ask because we're worried we might say the wrong thing.

But checking in doesn't require a perfect speech. It can be as simple as:

πŸ’¬ β€œHow have you really been going?”
πŸ’¬ β€œIs everything OK?”
πŸ’¬ β€œWant to talk about it?”
πŸ’¬ β€œI’m here if you need me.”

And if they're not ready to talk, that's okay too. Let them know you're there, listen without judgement, and check in again when the time is right.

Because sometimes, starting the conversation is the most important step.

As we get closer to R U OK?Day on Thursday, 10 September, let's make checking in part of everyday care not just something we do once a year.

πŸ‘‰ Save this post for later and share it with someone who may need a little reminder to reach out.

Ask. Listen. Connect.

One of the biggest concerns families can have when considering Supported Independent Living is:

β€œWill my loved one still be able to make their own choices?”

The answer is: support should empower not take over.

Quality support can help participants:

🌱 Build everyday skills
🎯 Work toward personal goals
πŸ’¬ Make choices about their routines and activities
🏑 Feel confident in their home
🀝 Stay connected with their community

Independence doesn't necessarily mean doing everything alone.

Sometimes, it means having the right support to do more for yourself.

And for families, that can mean knowing their loved one is being supported while still having a voice in their own life.

πŸ’™ Your life. Your goals. Your choices. Your way.

πŸ‘‰ Thinking about SIL for yourself or someone you love? You don't need to have all the answers. Send Haven Care Australia a message and let's start with a conversation.

Connection Matters.

Sometimes, support starts with simply being there.

It can be sitting beside someone, listening to their story, sharing a laugh, or taking a moment to ask how they're really doing.

Meaningful support isn't always about having the right answers. Sometimes, it's about making someone feel seen, heard, valued and connected.

At Haven Care, we believe that genuine connection is an important part of creating meaningful support and helping people feel confident and supported in their everyday lives.

As we approach R U OK?Day on Thursday, 10 September, let's remember to make time for the people around us.

πŸ‘‰ Who can you connect with today? Send them a message, make a call, or simply be there.

Sometimes, being there is enough.

17/08/2026

A simple β€œHow are you going?” can mean so much more when we take the time to genuinely listen.

R U OK?Day is coming up on Thursday, 10 September, but checking in with the people around us shouldn't happen just once a year.

Whether it’s a participant, family member, friend, colleague, carer or support worker take a moment to ask how they’re really doing.

You don't need to have all the answers. Sometimes, simply being there and listening can make a difference.

Start the conversation. Ask. Listen. Connect. πŸ’›

Think of someone you care about. Send them a message today and ask, β€œAre you really OK?”

You Want Independence. They Want to Know You’re Safe.

For a participant, moving toward greater independence can mean:

🌱 Making your own choices.
🏑 Having a place that feels like home.
🎯 Working toward your own goals.
🀝 Building confidence and connections.

For a family, it can mean:

❀️ Knowing your loved one is safe.
πŸ’¬ Knowing they are being listened to.
🌱 Seeing them grow in confidence.
😊 Knowing they are supportednot controlled.

And both can be true.

Independence doesn't mean doing everything alone.

And support doesn't mean giving up control.

The right support creates space for both. πŸ’™

At Haven Care Australia, we believe the participant's voice should remain at the centre while families can feel confident that their loved one is supported with dignity, respect and care.

Your loved one's journey is theirs.

We're here to support it not take it over.
