What we repeat matters. What we focus on matters. And what we practise, our brain gets better at. 🧠🌿

I loved these reminders from neuroscientist drtaraswart because they capture something I talk about often — our brains are constantly learning from our experiences, thoughts and behaviours.

Neuroplasticity means the brain can adapt and change throughout our lives. The patterns we practise repeatedly can become stronger and more familiar over time.

So perhaps the question isn’t just “What am I thinking?” but also…

“What am I teaching my brain through repetition?”

A beautiful reminder to be intentional about where we place our attention and what we practise each day. 💚

Movement doesn’t always have to look like a structured workout.

It’s a huge part of the Wellness Cupboard philosophy, and when I have a little extra time — and some solid ground beneath me 😂 — I love experimenting with different ways to move.

Some of these are trends I’ve seen and thought “I’ll give it a go!”. Others are yoga inversions I like to play around with every now and then.

Trying unfamiliar movements asks your brain and body to coordinate, problem-solve and adapt. Learning and practising new motor skills encourages neuroplasticity — your brain literally adapts as you develop and refine a new skill.

But perhaps most importantly — movement should be fun.

Changing things up keeps movement interesting. It gives you an opportunity to play, experiment, challenge yourself and sometimes laugh when things don’t go quite according to plan. 😂

Something I’ve heard more than once after my retreats is:

“I didn’t think I’d like that.”

Sometimes we decide something isn’t for us before we’ve even tried it.

So whether it’s a new movement, class, hobby, puzzle — or a ridiculous internet challenge — give it a go. You might surprise yourself. 🌿.

And a little thank you to Four Springs Villa & Inn for such a lovely stay — spacious, peaceful and so conveniently located. The perfect little base for my time in St Lucia. 🌿☀️

Some days the anxiety needs to be walked out of your body. Other days, moving harder only pours fuel on the fire.

In perimenopause, the question isn't whether to move or rest. It's which one your nervous system is asking for in that moment.

Mindful movement, a walk, some gentle yoga, easy fitness, gives cortisol somewhere to go. It discharges the buildup and hands you back a sense of agency in your own body. This is the one to reach for when you feel restless, sluggish, or flat, and there's still a little energy to draw on.

Stillness works the other way. Meditation, a body scan, a few affirmations. These down-regulate a stress response that's already over-fired. This is the one for the days overwhelm has taken over, when anxiety spikes out of nowhere, or when sleep keeps slipping away.

Neither is willpower. Neither is the better choice. They're answering different questions your body is already asking.

So before you decide whether to push or pause, check in first. If your system feels restless and under-used, move. If it feels flooded and frayed, be still.

🧠 4 ways to challenge your brain.

Keeping your brain healthy doesn’t have to mean spending hours on puzzles or apps. Hand coordination exercises like these can challenge your brain in new ways by encouraging focus, coordination and learning.

Our hands occupy a surprisingly large area of the brain, so learning unfamiliar hand movements gives your brain something new to work on. As you practise, your brain has the opportunity to build and strengthen neural pathways—a process known as neuroplasticity.

✨ Try each exercise for at least 30 seconds. Start slowly, then gradually build up the pace as your coordination improves. If you don’t get it today, keep practising—you’ll often be amazed at how much easier it feels after a few days.

📌Save this post to practise later, and follow for more practical brain health tips.

Happy International Left-Handers Day! ✋🎉

Whether you’re left-handed or right-handed, there’s something we can all benefit from: using our non-dominant hand a little more often.

Simple activities like brushing your teeth, stirring your coffee, opening a door, or writing a few words with your opposite hand challenge your brain in new ways. While it might feel awkward at first, that’s often a sign your brain is working to build and strengthen new neural connections.

It’s not about becoming ambidextrous—it’s about giving your brain a fresh challenge and stepping outside your usual routine.

To celebrate, I’ve created a Tiny Tool that gives both hands a different job at the same time. One hand follows one movement, the other does something completely different… then you swap! It’s a fun little challenge for your coordination, focus, and your brain.

Six minutes of guided breath work on a Wednesday morning doesn't feel like much.

It's the kind of thing that's easy to skip, easy to forget, easy to dismiss as too small to matter.

But every time you return to a practice, you're reinforcing a pathway. What you practise consistently becomes what's familiar. And what's familiar becomes what your brain reaches for first when the afternoon turns sharp and your shoulders start climbing towards your ears.

I don't think wellbeing is about fixing ourselves. There's no finish line, no perfect routine, and no one-size-fits-all approach. It's about building a collection of practical tools you can return to when you need them most.

That's why Wellness Cupboard offers a variety of tools to fit into real life. A short breath practice. A few quiet minutes of meditation. A neuroplasticity exercise before the day begins. It's not about finding more time. It's about finding the right tools.

What grows slowly, holds.🌿
