What Is NDIS?

If you or someone you love has a disability, you have probably heard the word NDIS. But what does it really mean? How does it work? And how can it help you live a better life?

At Blue Umbrella Disability Service, we meet people every day who are confused about the NDIS. That is completely normal — the system can feel big and complicated at first. This guide will explain everything in simple, easy words, so you feel confident .

What Does NDIS Stand For?

NDIS stands for National Disability Insurance Scheme. It is a program run by the Australian Government that gives support and funding to people with a permanent and significant disability.

In simple words, the NDIS is like a helping hand from the government. It gives you money (called "funding") to pay for services and support that help you live your daily life more easily — things like therapy, personal care, equipment, and community activities.

Who Started the NDIS and Why?

Before the NDIS, disability support in Australia was different in every state, and many people did not get enough help. The government created the NDIS to fix this problem. It started in 2013 and is now used across the whole country.

The main goal of the NDIS is simple: to give people with disability more choice, control, and independence over their own lives.

Who Can Get NDIS Support?

Not everyone can join the NDIS. There are some basic rules. You may be able to get NDIS support if:

You are under 65 years old when you apply
You are an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa
You have a permanent disability that affects how you do everyday things, OR you need early help (early intervention) to reduce the impact of your disability in the future

Disabilities that may qualify include intellectual disability, autism, physical disability, psychosocial disability (mental health related), vision or hearing impairment, and many more.

What Does the NDIS Actually Pay For?

This is the part most people want to know! The NDIS gives you funding based on your own personal goals and needs. Every person's plan is different because every person's life is different.

Some common things the NDIS can fund include:

Daily personal care – help with showering, dressing, eating, and other daily tasks
Therapy support – like physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and psychology
Support workers – people who help you at home or in the community
Assistive technology – wheelchairs, hearing aids, communication devices
Home modifications – ramps, grab rails, bathroom changes to make your home safer
Transport support – help getting to appointments, work, or social activities
Social and community participation – joining clubs, classes, or group activities to build friendships and confidence
Supported Independent Living (SIL) – help for people who want to live on their own with support

The NDIS does not usually pay for everyday living costs like rent, food, or things not related to your disability.

The Three Types of NDIS Funding

Once you are approved, your NDIS plan is divided into three "buckets" of funding. Understanding these helps you use your plan wisely.

1. Core Support

This is the most flexible type of funding. It covers everyday needs like personal care, transport, and consumables (like continence products). You can often move money between these categories if needed.

2. Capacity Building

This funding helps you build skills and independence over time. For example, therapy to improve your communication, or support to help you find a job.

3. Capital Support

This is for higher-cost items like assistive technology, equipment, or home modifications. This funding must be used only for the exact purpose written in your plan.

The NDIS can feel overwhelming when you first hear about it, but it is really just a system designed to help you live a fuller, more independent life. With the right guidance and support, using your plan can be simple and stress-free.
