It’s exciting to share the latest progress on our five purpose-built Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes in Alice Springs.

With construction continuing to move forward, the homes are becoming easier to imagine as future places to live, designed to support greater independence, accessibility, choice and everyday comfort for people with disability in Central Australia.

For Somerville Housing, this project is about more than building houses. It is about creating homes that are designed around the needs of the people who will live in them and increasing the availability of suitable SDA options in Alice Springs.

Last week, we were delighted to celebrate the official commencement of construction of five new Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) homes in Alice Springs.

The event marked an exciting milestone for Somerville Housing as we continue our commitment to delivering high-quality, accessible housing for Territorians living with disability.

We were honoured to be joined by The Hon. Steve Edgington MLA, Chansey Paech: Member for Gwoja, representatives from the Northern Territory Government, AsBuild NT, Susan Dugdale & Associates, members of the Somerville Housing Board, and our dedicated staff to celebrate the beginning of this important project.

These purpose-built SDA homes will provide safe, modern and accessible housing designed to support people with disability to live with greater independence, choice and dignity within their community.

This project represents a significant investment in Alice Springs and reflects Somerville Housing's ongoing commitment to increasing the availability of Specialist Disability Accommodation across the Northern Territory.

A sincere thank you to everyone who joined us to celebrate this important occasion and to our project partners for helping bring this vision to life.

This brand-new High Physical Support SDA, architecturally designed by Troppo Architects, is purpose-built to support independence, comfort and quality of life. The home exceeds National Construction Code and NDIS SDA Design Standard requirements and is thoughtfully designed to respond to individual participant needs and the local environment.

Features include assistive technology readiness, spacious open-plan living, large accessible bathrooms, ceiling hoist access from bedroom to bathroom, an overnight accommodation room for support staff, individual private courtyards, shared outdoor spaces, and a magnesium therapy mobility pool.

All SDA design categories are considered, including participants who do not currently have SDA funding in their NDIS plan.
