Last Week In Our GP Skin Clinic 🩺

A busy and varied week looking after skin, at all ages and stages. Thank you to everyone who came in and for accomodating some changes in your schedule.

Here are some of the concerns we discussed last week:

- Periorificial dermatitis around the eyelids
A reaction to skincare products. This delicate area can be very sensitive — often less is more, and barrier repair is key.

-Review after facial skin tag removal
2-week follow-up — area healing well.
We always review healing and aftercare.

Skin tags removal — face & neck
Discussed and performed using radiofrequency technique where suitable. Not all tags or locations are suitable, assessment is needed first.

-Acne consultations
Ongoing management for persistent breakouts, focusing on triggers, skincare, and evidence-based treatment options.

-Excessive underarm sweating (axillary hyperhidrosis)
A consultation to discuss what causes it and what supportive options are available. It’s much more common than people think.

-Jaw clenching & teeth grinding
Discussed how jaw tension relates to headaches, jaw pain and facial muscle overactivity, and what medical options may be explored with your GP / dentist.

-Skin health in post-menopause
Changes in dryness, sensitivity and collagen after menopause are very common. We focused on gentle, barrier-supportive care and prevention.

-Persistent rash around the mouth in a young girl. Long-standing redness and bumps around the mouth area — a common presentation in children where gentle skin care and trigger avoidance are important. GP assessment is key to rule out overlapping causes.

-Itchy rash on legs and body
A widespread itchy rash — we discussed how many different causes can look similar and why an in-person skin assessment is important to guide next steps.

If you identify with any of these, you are welcome to book a dedicated appointment to discuss your own concerns and suitability.

Hyperhidrosis is more than just sweating a lot.

It’s a common medical condition that can significantly affect daily life, work, confidence and emotional wellbeing — and many people suffer in silence thinking there’s nothing that can be done.
As GPs, we play an important role in its recognition, assessment and initial management. That includes ruling out underlying causes, grading severity, and discussing evidence-based treatment options.

If sweating is impacting your quality of life, it’s worth a conversation.
Effective help is available, and you don’t have to just live with it.

For further information, you may contact the clinic or speak with your usual GP.

Last week in clinic — no two consultations are the same.

I saw patients for:

• lesion checks and skin tag concerns
Consultations to assess new or changing lesions and discuss safe removal options for bothersome skin tags.

• acne — in a teenage boy navigating his first routine, and a woman in her 40s dealing with adult-onset flares
Acne at Every Age — acne looks different at different life stages, and so does the management plan.

• a thoughtful chat about wrinkles and what “natural” means to her
Consultations to discuss prevention and softening of expression lines while keeping results natural.

• pigmentation and sun damage
A very common concern after our Aussie summer. We discussed causes, sun protection strategies, and evidence-based treatment pathways.

• rosacea + perioral dermatitis — a tricky combo that needs gentle, consistent care
Two conditions that often get mistaken for “sensitive skin” or acne. Education on triggers and barrier support is key.

• and weight management as part of skin and overall wellness
Skin health and metabolic health are closely linked. We offer non-judgmental, GP-led support as part of whole-person care.

If any of these sound familiar, you’re not alone.
If you’ve been putting off getting something checked because you’re not sure if it’s “worth a consult” — it is.

Book a dedicated skin consultation to discuss what options may be suitable for you.

What’s that little gadget we use when you come in for a consult? 🔍

At Otway Aesthetics and Skin Clinic, we’re your local GP with a special interest in skin.
One tool you’ll see us use is a dermatoscope — think of it as a super-powered magnifying glass for your skin.
It's like a microscope for your skin, using polarized light and 10x magnification to reveal colour, structure, and blood vessels in moles and lesions.

Why we love using it:
• It helps us see more: The light and magnification let us look under the surface of moles and spots. That means we can often tell you “that’s harmless” on the spot, and avoid sending you for tests you don’t need
• It’s not just for skin cancer: We also use it to figure out common things like rashes, scalp issues, warts, or that stubborn itchy spot you’ve been wondering about
• No pain, no fuss: We just hold it against your skin — no needles or scraping

As a GP, we look at your whole health — not just your skin. The dermatoscope just helps us give you better, more confident answers during your appointment. ✨
