Last night, our team had the opportunity to visit Life Rites Funerals for an evening of discussion and learning with founder Victoria Spence and funeral director Ben Gibson.

Why would a team of psychologists visit a funeral home?

At MAC, much of our work centres around death anxiety and existential concerns. Many people understandably avoid reminders of death, including conversations about mortality, funerals, hospitals, and cemeteries. However, avoidance often strengthens fear over time.

One evidence-based treatment for anxiety is exposure therapy: gradually approaching the things we fear in safe and meaningful ways. In many ways, the evening was about practising what we preach, and engaging with mortality in the same open and intentional way we encourage our clients to do.

The visit also gave our team the opportunity to learn more about the practical and emotional processes surrounding death, grief, end-of-life rituals, and the ways that thoughtful, compassionate funeral care can support families through some of the hardest moments of their lives.

We’re very grateful to Victoria and Ben for their openness and generosity in facilitating such thoughtful and important conversations. It was an incredibly valuable experience for our team, both personally and professionally.

If you were listening to ABC Radio Sydney this afternoon, you may have heard our Clinical Lead, Benjamin Petrovic, being interviewed! 🎙️🎧

Benjamin was invited onto the "Afternoons" show to unpack where phobias come from, how they’re maintained, and importantly, how effective treatment can be.

As Benjamin explained, phobias aren’t just “everyday fears”. Instead, they tend to involve significant distress or avoidance that interferes with daily life.

Listeners also called in with their own experiences, making for a thoughtful and engaging discussion about how common (and treatable) these difficulties are.

If you missed it, you can still listen via the ABC Listen app, in today’s Afternoons segment (April 21).

Well done, Benjamin! 👏🏼

Our Director, Dr Rachel Menzies, was recently invited to deliver the opening talk at the Context Matters Symposium at La Trobe University in Melbourne.

Rachel's presentation highlighted the role of death anxiety as a key driver of psychological distress, and unpacked her latest research on treatments for this form of anxiety.

It was a fantastic event bringing together researchers and clinicians from across Australia and New Zealand, focused on advancing contextual behavioural science and its real-world applications.

At the Menzies Anxiety Centre, we are passionate about translating cutting-edge research into meaningful, evidence-based treatment for our clients.

We’re excited to see the research and the conversations in this space continue to grow!

Today our Clinical Lead Benjamin Petrovic visited the University of Sydney to speak with third-year psychology students about becoming a clinical psychologist.

He gave students a behind-the-scenes look at clinical training, practical insights on treating anxiety disorders, and a glimpse into life in private practice.

A big thank you to Benjamin for sharing his time and expertise. We are always proud to see MAC clinicians helping inspire the next generation of psychologists!
