What is Yoga Nidra?
The first step toward Yoga Nidra is simply to slow down.
Through gentle movement, soft stretching and relaxed breathing we reconnect the mind with the body, becoming aware of where we are in space and how we are holding ourselves. As tension begins to release, the nervous system naturally shifts from "fight or flight" into "rest and digest."
As we move and breathe together, the rhythm of the group creates a quiet sense of safety. The heart rate slows, the breath lengthens and the body settles into a more balanced, restorative state.
From here we explore simple breathing practices that help quiet the mind and prepare us for Yoga Nidra—often described as the state between waking and sleeping. We remain awake and aware, but without chasing thoughts or becoming caught in them.
The guided meditation allows the thinking mind to soften as the brain enters the slower brainwave states associated with deep rest. This is where the body restores, the nervous system recalibrates and the mind has the opportunity to release, repair and integrate.
During this deeply restful state we gently introduce a Sankalpa—a heartfelt intention, planted like a seed in fertile soil. With regular practice that intention, like a garden tended with care, has the opportunity to deepen and grow alongside greater self-compassion.
Like any practice, Yoga Nidra becomes richer with familiarity. As your nervous system learns that this is a safe and predictable place to rest, it becomes easier to settle into profound relaxation.
There is an abundance of information about Yoga Nidra available today, and I encourage you to explore it. While recordings can be wonderful, practising with a live guide allows you to completely let go of planning and doing, and simply receive the experience.
I look forward to sharing this beautiful practice with you.
