Is your toddler's language on track for their age? 💬✨

When we think about language development, it's important to remember there are two key skills:

👂 Receptive language: what your child understands
🗣️ Expressive language: how they use words to communicate

A child’s understanding almost always develops before their spoken language. That means following simple directions, pointing to familiar objects and understanding everyday words are all important milestones!

As expressive language grows, you'll see exciting changes like:
✨ Learning new words each week
✨ Combining two words together (e.g. ""more milk"")
✨ Using words instead of gestures to communicate more often

Every child develops at their own pace, but knowing the milestones can help you recognise when they may benefit from extra support. Early intervention can make a meaningful difference to communication, learning and confidence.

Save this post for your milestone check-ins 💛

Speech sound practice doesn’t have to happen at home! 🚗🌱💬

Everyday outings can create fun, natural opportunities to practise your child’s speech sounds. From walking around the neighbourhood to heading to the shops, you can use the things you see around you to model and reinforce your child’s target sounds.

Keeping practice connected to real-life experiences can make articulation practice feel more meaningful, engaging and fun, without turning it into a formal therapy activity.

Remember, children learn through repetition and hearing clear speech models, so those little everyday moments can add up! 💛

It's the small moments that remind us why we love what we do. 💛

For Zara, one of those moments came when she saw a preschooler she had been supporting with social communication skills confidently playing with his friends at preschool - independently using the skills they had been working on together in therapy.

These moments are what make speech pathology so rewarding. It’s not just about what happens in the therapy room; it’s about seeing our clients take the skills they’ve developed and use them in real-life moments that matter to them. 🥹✨

From building social communication and self-advocacy to supporting meaningful friendships and participation, every small step can lead to a big difference in a child’s everyday life.

We’re so proud to be part of those journeys. 💬🌱

Communication is a two-way street. 💬💛

Sometimes, the most helpful thing we can do when communicating with someone is simply slow down, be patient and give them time to express themselves.

As Venessa shares, it’s okay to let someone know that they can ask you to repeat something if they didn’t understand. Creating a space where people feel comfortable asking for clarification can make communication more inclusive, respectful and accessible.

Good communication isn't about getting every word right the first time! It’s about making sure everyone has the opportunity to be understood and included. 🗣️✨

HAPPY SPEECH PATHOLOGY WEEK!
Communication is so much more than talking. 💬💛

When we think about communication, we often picture spoken words - but there are so many ways to connect, express ourselves, share our needs and understand others.

Communication can include gestures, facial expressions, body language, tone of voice, signs, AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) and other forms of expression. For some people, choosing not to speak can also be a valid form of communication.

As speech pathologists, our role isn't simply to help people talk. It's about supporting each person to find communication methods that are functional, meaningful, accessible and right for them.

Every form of communication deserves to be heard, valued and respected. All communication creates possibility. 💛

Key Word Sign of the Week: “How are you?” 👋💛

Communication is about more than sharing needs! It’s also about building social connection and having meaningful interactions with others.

The sign for “How are you?” is a simple way to support your child’s social communication, while pairing the sign with spoken language gives them another way to participate in everyday conversations.

Try modelling this during greetings, family routines, play, or when checking in with your child. Repeated exposure to simple social phrases can help build language skills, communication confidence and social interaction over time.

✨ Follow along each week for more Australian Key Word Signs, speech therapy tips and practical ways to support your child’s communication at home.

🗣️ Every voice is unique and deserves to be looked after.

Did you know that around 1 in 3 people will experience voice difficulties at some point in their lives? This includes children!

A hoarse, breathy or strained voice that doesn’t improve after a few weeks may be a sign of dysphonia. Voice changes can happen for many reasons, including illness, vocal overuse, muscle tension or acid reflux.

For many people, particularly neurodivergent individuals, the goal isn’t to change how someone sounds - it’s to support comfortable, sustainable communication while respecting their unique voice and communication style.

If you’ve noticed ongoing changes to your or your child’s voice, vocal fatigue or discomfort when speaking, it’s worth having a chat with your GP, an ENT specialist or a speech pathologist.

💙 Want to learn more? We’ve unpacked what dysphonia is, what causes it and how it can be managed in our blog. Head to the link in our bio to read more.

Leaving the house can sometimes feel like a race against the clock! 🚪👟

When your child is holding onto something or doesn’t want to leave, it can be tempting to pull them along or physically guide them towards the door. Instead, declarative language can help turn the moment into an opportunity for connection, problem-solving and participation.

Rather than forcing them to follow, try sharing a thought or wondering together:

💬 “How many steps do you think it is from here to the door?”

This invites your child to think, engage and take part in the transition without placing the focus solely on following a direct instruction.

Small changes in how we communicate can make everyday transitions feel more collaborative. 💛

Key Word Signs of the Week: “Like” & “Don’t Like” 💬✨

These simple signs help children express their preferences, opinions and feelings in everyday moments. Whether they’re choosing a snack, playing a game or deciding what activity they want to do, being able to communicate likes and dislikes supports confidence and connection.

Using key word signs alongside spoken language can help reduce frustration while encouraging children to share their thoughts in meaningful ways 💛

Keep practising these signs naturally throughout daily routines and play.
