Next week is all about play! I’m sure my students at some point or another have heard me talk about the importance of play. What children instinctually know and we, as adults, forget.. is how to play… how to let go and explore our experience without judgement, completely uninhibited. I invite you to come play with me Monday 6am and Wednesday 6am so we can investigate our experiences together. No judgements or inhibitions! Remember, yoga isn’t about what you can do with your body, but just being present to how it feels to be in your skin. What better way to start your day than with a little bit of fun and some juicy movement 🤸🏽‍♂️ accessible for all levels and modifications are always given for those tricky chronic issues, ailments and injuries 🧘🏼‍♀️

🦅Garudasana, otherwise known as Eagle Pose, has been named for a divine creature called a Garuda. This mythical “king of the birds” is described having the golden body of a human, an eagle’s beak and red wings. Garuda has also been named as the vehicle of Vishnu, known as creation’s sustainer and protector. Garuda carries Vishnu through the sky without ever needing to land because it knows how to ride the wind.

As we take practice for Monday’s flow, we work to protect and sustain our intention by sharpening our focus moment to moment. To embody this vehicle of preservation, I encourage you to investigate what qualities you must harness as support for your intention. Remember that compassion for practice and self is key. Come and find the mind-body balance at 6am and allow yourself to experience the freedom of riding the wind for yourself🦅

I lost my way 🌫
But I’m back now 🌌

My formal Yoga journey began in Nam and teaching, India. Living in SE Asia for several years, I didn’t think so much about the warped Western Yoga perspective because that was so foreign from where I was living.

FF📼2019 I moved to WA. Everywhere: hot, power and fitness. I would self practice at various studios and for the majority it was all🔥 & “it’s not a real practice unless you sweat uncontrollably from your eyeballs” can you even sweat from your eyeballs?👀

I felt constrained by, what I believed to be, an expectation to teach a fitness class. It was then I slowly began to compromise myself in an attempt to please everyone and attract Asana (physical practice) focused and holistic, spiritual Yoga practitioner alike. Was I ever wrong!

I didn’t need to change teaching from my heart, for the joy of moving my body in ways that felt juicy and squishy while being anatomically smart about what I was creating. I teach at studios that have always given me the freedom to create and be authentic, but I unintentionally still became so worn by misguided outside, Western, expectations. While continuing to teach about mind-body connection, spirituality and maintaining an authentic/thoughtful Yin style, I wasn’t leading by example in the construction of my Vinyasa flows. I was so focused on making something challenging, I somehow missed that I didn’t need to exhaust my students during warm up to create something satisfying. I lost sight of the necessary progression a proper warm up carries as well as the natural challenges a complex flow nurtures. I was feeling anxious about teaching and like I couldn’t get it right. I sacrificed so much of me. I slowly lost trust in myself and what I had to offer as being enough.

Feedback from my students made me realise that all of what I gave up, in striving to fulfil the demand for fitness, was exactly what I needed. I’m sure we all, at some point, feel “not enough” and it leads us astray to something “other.” I finally found my way back to something authentic & imperfect, an ode to feel good exploration in the moment. I won’t always hit the mark, but I found myself in movement again🤍🙌🏼

I got a lot of messages in the last few hours asking why I didn’t post for International Yoga Day...

I can honestly only respond one way to this query 🧘🏼‍♀️
I think it’s beautiful that there is a day to celebrate and appreciate, but at the same time... yoga is not a destination, it’s a journey. Coming from the Sanskrit ‘Yug’ meaning unification, yoga in simplistic terms can be understood as the journey of recognising the interconnectedness of the universe without allowing Kleshas (obstacles of the ego) pull you away from being present in your true nature 💫 It’s a journey of thousands, if not millions of lifetimes of repeating and learning lessons, of mindful work. It’s every day, not just one. So, perhaps International Yoga Day is best celebrated by recognising that YOU, whether you practice Asana or not, whether you have ever mediated or taken a yoga class in your life, are on this incredible journey of Yug and that is something to be marveled.

Recognising that you are everything and nothing all at once 🌍🌌

Still waiting for the next set of episodes on the Human Sexual Response Cycle and the Cl****is?

Don’t worry, I haven’t forgotten you! Moving house and dissertation deadlines have been calling my name but the new set of videos will be up very soon!

Understanding your limitations and being mindful of where you put your energy is an important aspect of yoga. Self-care is not wearing yourself too thin even if that means it causes a wee bit of disappointment. I’m only human after all 🖤🙏🏻

Sitting at a computer all day puts a heavy strain on our spine. We spend hours in a position that collapses our chest inward, affecting our heart chakras. It closes us off to the world and leaves us feeling limited and internally isolated during a time when we are already cut off from so much.

Just because we have to stay inside, doesn’t mean we can’t leave ourselves open 💚

Alignment: make sure hips remain over knees as much as you can. Toes can be tucked or untucked (if you have knee issues, tucked will likely help or you can place a cushion such as a folded blanket under the legs). Forehead to the ground, or if you would like more, chin to the ground. Don’t strain your neck!! Add a bolster under the arms (shoulders distance apart) for a deeper stretch. Breathe... and melt into the floor🕯

The heart chakra is green, feel free to use this yantra (image) to focus the mind 💚🌿

For more deep stretching, check out my online juicy yin classes Dharmadhatuyoga.com available to anyone, anywhere in the globe 🙏🏻
