Happy Mabo Day! How better to celebrate than by delivering training in Nhulunbuy, East Arnhem Land to the most incredible group of practitioners šŸ–¤šŸ’›ā¤ļø

ā€˜Mabo Day is celebrated annually on June 3 to commemorate the historic 1992 High Court of Australia decision in Mabo v Queensland (No 2). Championed by Torres Strait Islander man Eddie Koiki Mabo, the landmark ruling overturned the legal fiction of terra nullius—the claim that Australia was "nobody's land" before European settlement—and formally recognized the traditional land ownership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.’

Always was, always will be šŸ–¤šŸ’›ā¤ļø

Thank you for having me Arnhem Land, what an absolute honour šŸ™šŸ»šŸ™ŒšŸ» More on this incredible journey tomorrow!

Hello Everyone,

The Child Protection Practitioners Association of Queensland (CPPAQ) is hosting another fantastic event next week: Inside the Inquiry: The Work Behind Queensland’s Child Safety Inquiry.

This is such a valuable opportunity to hear directly from those involved in the Inquiry process and gain insight into what occurred behind the scenes, how recommendations were shaped, and the broader policy considerations influencing the sector.

If you’re receiving this email, there’s a strong chance you’re a regional practitioner like me — but thankfully, there’s also a livestream option available so regional Queensland doesn’t miss out.

Family lawyers, this is highly relevant to your work as well. The intersection between Family Law and Child Protection continues to grow, and these conversations are becoming increasingly important across both systems.

Early years practitioners, teachers and allied professionals may also find this especially valuable, as it provides important insight into how policy, systems, and sector responses are influenced and developed.

Please feel free to share this throughout your networks. Events like this are such an important way to support CPPAQ as we continue working to strengthen practitioner connection, advocacy, and support right across our very large state.

And if you’re not yet a member — please consider joining! We’re working incredibly hard to grow our regional membership base and continue enhancing what we can offer to practitioners across Queensland.

Happy Mother’s Day

This was supposed to be recorded and uploaded yesterday but… life šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™€ļøšŸ«£

I’m not much of a poet but I write down random thoughts and sometimes, something actually comes of it.

So to all Mum’s but especially our BleuDore Mum’s, you can have all the professionals in the world but it’s you, who makes the real difference.

The world is a much softer place because of you šŸ’™šŸ©·

Happy Mother’s Day šŸ’™

I wrote a beautiful poem to record and upload for Mother’s Day… did I get a moment to actually do that today? Absolutely not. Chaos very much chose violence and reigned supreme (Even Mila the Wonder Beagle was loopy!) šŸ˜µā€šŸ’«šŸ«©ā˜•ļø

But did I spend countless moments today thinking about all the incredible Mums, especially our amazing BleuDore Mums, and just how deeply in awe I am of you all? Absolutely yes.

The Mums managing the hard days, the loud days, the sensory days, the emotional days, the ā€˜I’ve reheated this coffee 4 times’ days… while still showing up with love, connection and fierce advocacy for their kids. You are honestly magic.

I hope today brought at least a few moments of calm, connection, laughter, cuddles, co-regulation… and maybe a sneaky regulation treat or two šŸ«

Tomorrow the poem WILL get uploaded šŸ™ŒšŸ»
(Probably alongside an iced latte, at 3am and mild exhaustion šŸ˜…)

Happy Mother’s Day from our family to yours šŸ©·šŸ’™šŸ’œ

Friday Funny!

All my clients are the absolute best, but somedays working in NDIS, Child Protection, Family Law and other complex systems… you just need to ground out and crash a cubby as a regulation strategy šŸ˜‚

*working from home attire with one slipper, it’s a judgement free zone! šŸ˜‚

When was the last time you asked your child for feedback?
Highly recommend you do this! Just remember that you need to sit with the feedback, DO NOT respond with shame & consequence or any sentence that starts with ā€˜yeah but…’ because you will lose the value of hearing the child’s voice.

Give it a go! Such a great way to build trust and model respect.

ADHD SIDE QUEST OF THE WEEK!

Now I unequivocally do not have time to be side questing, but nonetheless, when have I ever let that stop me!

Everything I say here about fidgeting, ADHD and the 3d printing of fidgets for my clients is absolutely correct. But more about that later… this was my side quest of the week 🤣🐱😈

DEEP PRESSURE!

Eammon & Bethany were promised months ago that they could be in a video about deep pressure, so I’ve been summoned to fulfil my oath!

What is ā€˜Deep Pressure’? How does it work? What’s happening in the body?

Deep pressure activates the proprioceptive system, the sensory system that tells us where our body is in space through muscles, joints, and connective tissue.

When firm, steady pressure is applied: Think of it like a hug, weighted blanket, being squished into a couch, it competes with and dampens overwhelming sensory input (noise, chaos, emotions)

In this video, I’m showing a few simple ways we use ā€˜deep pressure’ at home.

• Hands-on deep pressure which is firm, steady, responsive to the child
• Our cylinder deep pressure pillow which provides a different type of pressure
• And a Squishmallow moment… where I ā€˜chat’ to the squishy about all the amazing things my child has done that day

Because here’s the thing about talking to a squishy or a toy… Kids LOVE hearing good things about themselves… But sometimes hearing it indirectly feels safer, easier, and more believable.

Deep pressure is powerful, but not universally calming. Every child is different!

• Never force it, as it can increase distress or trigger trauma responses in some children and people
• ALWAYS ask for consent to touch their bodies, and again if you know the child well enough to provide pressure to their hips/bottom.
• I NEVER apply pressure to the hips/bottom on client children or any children other than my own. Again, only with their permission.
• Some children are tactile defensive and may find it overwhelming.
• Always follow the child’s cues
• Offer choice and control, such as ā€˜Do you want more or less pressure?’
• Reaffirm consent through the process by asking ā€˜Have you had enough or should I keep going?’
• Watch for signs it’s working: slower breathing, softer body, engagement returning
