A woman’s nervous system is part of her birth too.
We talk so much about monitoring labour… but not nearly enough about what the room is communicating to the woman in it.

Do you understand how much your environment can affect your nervous system?

Saying no can feel uncomfortable.

Especially when you’re sitting across from someone you see as the expert.
Especially when they seem confident.
Especially when you don’t want to be difficult, rude or “that patient.”

So sometimes we say yes before we’ve really decided.

Yes to the test.
Yes to the procedure.
Yes to the timeline.
Yes to the recommendation.

Not because it feels right.

Because saying no feels harder.

But informed choice includes the right to pause, ask questions, ask for more time and decline.

You don’t have to say no to everything.

You just need to know that you can.

Ownership of your birth doesn’t come from controlling every outcome.

It comes from knowing the decisions you made were actually yours.

How comfortable are you saying “no” when something doesn’t feel right?

My first birth taught me that I know my body. My second made me feel completely powerless.

My third taught me that your past births don’t have to write the story of your next and that women are strong, capable, powerful and absolutely KNOW what is right for them and their baby.

It’s pretty crazy that most of us get all the way to having our own babies without ever seeing a real birth.

Instead we’ve watched the movie version. Waters break, everyone panics, there’s a mad rush to hospital and a woman screaming on her back.

But the thing is, birth really can be all of those things. Or none of them.

It can be loud or quiet. Fast or slow. Calm or messy. It can stop and start for days or feel like it came out of nowhere.

There is so much variation in what normal birth can look like.

I wonder if we weren’t trying to cram a lifetime of learning about birth into 9 months, and instead grew up actually seeing real birth, would we fear it less and understand it more?

Birth makes so much more sense when you understand what your body is actually doing.

The environment affects the hormones.
The hormones affect the contractions.
The contractions affect the birth process and the way your body and baby work together.

Understanding birth doesn’t remove every unknown.

But it can change the way you see it.

There can be a significant gap between what maternity research tells us and what becomes routine practice.

Evidence can change long before systems, policies and habits do.

Ask questions. Understand your options.

Use your VOICE (Verify - is the recommendation evidence based , Options - ask what are your other options, Intuition - does the recommendation feel right for you?, Consider - what are the benefits and trade offs of each option?, Enough time - is this an emergency? Urgency and pressure are not the same thing.
