I just finished reading a book that’s a memoir written by a woman I know.
When I finished it, I was overcome with so much emotion.
I felt deep shock and sadness knowing what she went through. My heart broke for her younger self.
Alongside that sadness was an intense sense of awe.
Not only for what she has overcome but more so for the woman she is today.
I’ve always admired her and thought she was a beautiful woman, wise and caring.
But knowing her story now has made me admire and love who she is so much more.
I recognised myself in moments where she spoke about her resilience and strength and determination to keep putting one foot in front of the other and to never give up. Also her inherent trust in the universe and that she will be ok no matter what.
It also has me thinking about us humans.
We are such special creatures.
We all have stories.
Things we have lived through and overcome. Moments that have knocked us down so low we think we can’t possibly get back up.
Experiences that have shaped us in ways others may never know.
It reminded me that we really have no idea what someone has lived through to become the person standing in front of us.
I think that’s why I’ve always been so drawn to hearing people’s stories.
There is so much more beneath the surface.
We see the person they are today.
We don’t always see the little boy or girl they once were.
We don’t see the moments that broken them.
The moments that changed them.
The strength it took to keep going.
Her story reminded me that the woman we become is not separate from everything we have been through.
Our experiences shape us, but they don’t have to define the limits of who we can become.
We can carry our stories without being confined by them.
We can heal.
We can grow.
We can create an amazing life for ourselves, even if our past once told a different story.
