At A2T, employment is often our participants’ long-term goal, but we know that getting there starts with building the basics first. That’s why our supports begin with capacity and skill development—things like time management, teamwork, communication, and staying focused on tasks. Once these foundations are in place, we step into volunteer work, which gives participants the chance to practice these skills in real-life situations.
This week at the Lighthouse, we paired participants together to encourage teamwork and show that, just like in the workplace, challenges and surprises can arise. While there was some initial resistance, the activity encouraged them to collaborate, check each other’s work, stay on task, and communicate effectively—all skills that build confidence and independence.
The end result was fantastic—you could hear plenty of conversation and laughter as they worked, showing that learning can be productive and fun.
Looking ahead, next week we’ll be profiling some of our participants to the broader community, and we welcome any support and encouragement you can give them as they continue their journey.
