Naloxone nasal spray is now available free of charge over the counter at Goombungee Pharmacy. This is a medicine that rapidly reverses the effect of opioid overdose. Having it on hand can quite literally mean the difference between life & death.
Opioid overdoses can happen suddenly. Knowing what to do in the moment could save a life. 🚨
Opioids are strong pain-killers prescribed by qualified healthcare providers.
Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose or bad reaction.
It comes as either a nasal spray or an injection. While paramedics often use it on patients, anyone can give it in an emergency if they have it handy.
It's important to remember that Naloxone only works for 30 to 90 minutes, so always call Triple Zero (000) and ask for an ambulance. The overdose symptoms can come back once the effects wear off and it could be life-threatening.
Signs of an opioid overdose may include:
👉 loss of consciousness
👉 very small (pinpoint) pupils
👉 slow, shallow, or snoring-like breathing
👉 pale or cold skin
👉 blue or grey lips and fingertips.
Queensland’s Take Home Naloxone (THN) program offers free, easy access to naloxone. No prescription is needed and it's available in limited amounts for anyone using opioids, their friends, families, and carers.
Naloxone is available at participating pharmacies, GP clinics, alcohol and other drug treatment services, community health services and hospital and health services.
