Allowing yourself to feel your emotions is the quickest way to good mental health.

But so many of us push down, ignore or push through or our emotions and the unprocessed emotion gets stored in our bodies.

I get that you can’t always let yourself feel something as it comes up. But it’s important to come back to it when you can.

My “I was successful but dead inside” podcast explains why you need to and shows you how.

The reason that all the work you’ve done to improve your mental health hasn’t stuck is because everything you have tried has focussed on your mind, your thoughts.

When we don't allow ourselves to feel our emotions, they go unprocessed and get stuck in your body. Over time the layers of emotion you haven’t processed build into tension, inflammation, exhaustion and emotional reactivity. A state where your nervous system is always on - survival mode.

Unless you deal with the emotion stuck in your body, anything you do to improve your mental health won’t stick because your nervous system is still stuck on. You'll be left constantly managing symptoms or using coping strategies rather than healing.

Your mental health won’t stay stable because it hasn’t got a stable base to build on. It’s like you are trying to build a Jenga tower on top of a Slinky. Imagine how tricky that would be. Every brick that gets taken out, every knock, every wobble will bring your tower crashing down.

But when you stabilise the base - your nervous system - real change is possible, everything starts to heal and your mind follows.

Most people were taught to avoid difficult emotion.

Distract from it. Push through it. Stay busy.

But suppressed emotion does not disappear.

This conversation explains why learning to safely feel emotion is a huge part of healing your nervous system.

Not reacting. Not suppressing. Actually processing.

Most people try to think their way out of anxiety, exhaustion and feeling flat.

But your body is already reacting before your conscious mind catches up.

That is why mind base mental health approaches alone often are not enough.

If emotion stays trapped in the body, the nervous system keeps firing like the threat is still there.

Understanding that changes everything about how you approach healing.

Survival mode is the reason the good life you’ve worked so hard to build feels flat. Despite everything you try you feel constantly numb, exhausted and on edge. Life just feels harder than it should.

The way to feeling like yourself again is through processing all the emotion that you haven’t felt safe or able to feel.

If you’ve been feeling like you are just going through the motions my “I was successful but dead inside” podcast is the conversation that you need to hear.
