A little overdue, but… this is me 😊
I’m Effie, the person behind Together Pathways, a mum of three and someone whose connection to disability began long before it became my work.
My brother has an intellectual disability and sustained a brain injury following an accident ten years ago. My older sister also sustained a brain injury at birth.
Growing up in a Greek family with parents who don’t speak English shaped my understanding of how difficult it can be to navigate services, understand information and make sure your family’s needs are heard.
As a family, we’ve experienced care that fell short of what our loved ones needed. Those experiences stayed with me and are a big part of why I care so much about listening, asking questions and following things through.
I know every family’s experience is different. Mine is what I bring with me when I sit down and listen to yours.
I support people with a wide range of disabilities, including intellectual disability, acquired brain injury and autism.
That might mean helping someone understand their options and where to start, finding supports that are a better fit, or helping a family navigate a difficult situation or change in needs.
I work alongside support workers, care agencies, day programs, therapists, schools and other services to help everyone communicate and work towards what matters to the person.
A big part of my role is noticing what may be missing, asking questions, following things up and advocating when someone doesn’t feel heard. When more support is needed, I also help gather the reports and evidence required to request additional funding.
Sometimes, it’s simply being the person someone can call and say, “I’m overwhelmed. Can you help me work through this?”
I love getting to know the people I support, building genuine relationships and seeing things begin to come together. Seeing someone feel heard, have more choice or take a step towards something that matters to them is why I love this work.
So, this is me and a little of the story behind Together Pathways 🤍
