Last week our Kitchen Garden team paid a visit to Dean Smith of Tunnel Hill Mushrooms. Dean is donating his time and knowledge to help our team start mushroom farming at Southern Support.
Our staff are learning so much and are excited to start this new adventure in the Kitchen Garden Program. Hopefully soon our students will be growing, picking, cooking, eating and exploring mushrooms!

Dear Families

We are delighted to invite you to our Book Week Assembly on Friday 28th August at 2:00 pm on the Junior Campus in the Gym. As part of the celebration, our Principal, Simon Ellaby, will share a special storytelling session with students and guests.

This special event will celebrate the joy of reading, books and storytelling. The theme for this year's Book Week is Symphony of Stories, encouraging us to explore the many voices, experiences and adventures that books bring to our lives.

On the Senior Campus students are invited to bring along a favourite book for reading in the classroom with staff.

Students are invited to come dressed as a favourite book character on the day if they feel comfortable doing so. Dressing up is completely optional, and students may prefer to wear their regular uniform.

Following the assembly on Junior Campus, parents and carers may take their child home from 2:30 pm. Students who are not being collected at this time will return to class and continue with their usual end of school day arrangements.

Ready, set, play!
The term has started with fun-filled net sports sessions, from soccer to giant racquet badminton. We have all been working on practicing new skills, playing partner games and on our sharing skills.

Our Kitchen Garden Team have started the term with an exciting new menu full of yummy winter warmers – hearty minestrone soup, thick cut focaccia bread, pot-sticker dumplings, savoury muffins and sweet berry cupcakes.

Students in grades 11-12 on the TASC program are kicking goals in Access to Work, Numeracy and Literacy through their participation in the school canteen program. Once a week the canteen program offers students the opportunity to count canteen orders and money, communicate with customers on delivery of the orders and to be part of a team when it comes to preparing food on the menu. The food items are then packed and delivered by the students. This process gives students the opportunity to work as a Team to be able to get all the orders out in time. Receiving their canteen orders delivered with a smile by S-Gold students makes everybody happy!

We have been having a terrific time in Pink Class and S Blue during our Kitchen time. This week we have focused on Naidoc week and been cooking with Native Edible plants such as Salt Bush, Pepper berry, River Mint and Oca. Our classes have been cooking Bush honey and Kunzea carrots and Cape Baron Corea tea. We have been joining S Red to sit in the senior kitchen at a set table to eat the food we have prepared.

This term, we have seen students grow in confidence and independence within their roles in the canteen.
Students have developed greater confidence using the trolley to deliver canteen orders across the school, working together to ensure everything arrives where it needs to be. Starting the day by harvesting produce from our garden continues to be a highlight, with students enjoying being involved in the process from garden to plate.
Our Mini Woolworths workers have also shown fantastic progress. They are now confidently using their AAC devices to ask the office for the key before independently completing their shopping using a visual list to find the correct items.
The school café is proving very popular with staff—last week even saw a small queue forming! The café team takes their role seriously, working hard to keep staff caffeinated and ready for the day.
Students are also doing a great job managing the new coffee machine. They are learning how to refill the milk, water tank, and coffee beans, building valuable practical skills along the way.
We look forward to another term of learning and seeing our students continue to shine in their canteen roles.

Wow! We’re nearly halfway through the year! We’ve had a great first half of 2026 in S-Blue. Everyone is enjoying getting to know our YLOT buddies and sharing our favourite games and activities in the playground and in the classroom. S-Blue students and Harrison and Cooper, our fabulous YLOT friends, are creating amazing artworks based on beautiful places in Tasmania. We have looked at pictures of lovely places, written about what we see in the pictures and chosen colours to represent those places. So far, we have used cold colours to represent Dove Lake in winter and warm colours to paint the beach in summer. It’s not all hard work though. There’s also been lots of fun playing hide and seek and ten pin bowling in the playground and making amazing creations with the giant blocks in the classroom.
Lots of students in S-Blue have chosen to write picture books during our literacy block. It’s fun to get a book down from the shelf and add to the story as we read! In maths we’re working on identifying and sorting colours. There are lots of opportunities as we move around the school to notice colours everywhere and we all enjoy a game of colour bingo in the class.
