Knee pain, sore hips, a grumbly lower back... Sometimes the trigger is further down than you'd expect.

Your feet are the foundation your whole body moves from. When the arch collapses inward (flat foot), it rotates the lower leg slightly, and because every joint works as a connected chain, that small shift can ripple up; turning up as knee, hip, or lower-back symptoms that seem unrelated to your feet.

It doesn't happen to everyone with flat feet, but if you've got aches that won't settle, it's well worth checking what's happening at ground level. A proper assessment can tell you whether your foot mechanics are feeding the problem, and what to do about it.

"It's just growing pains." Maybe. But there's one pattern that's worth a second look, because it's the most common cause of heel pain in active kids, and it has a bit of a tell.

If the sore spot is the heel, and it flares up during or after footy/dancing/running but eases off with rest, that's not the usual vague growing-pains picture. That's the pattern we see with Sever's. The good news is it's common, harmless, and very manageable once you know what you're dealing with.

No need to pull your child out of the sport they love. A quick check is often all it takes to get them moving comfortably again.

You feel like there's a pebble stuck under the ball of your foot. It burns a little, maybe the toes go numb. Could be a Morton's neuroma...
Maybe. Or it could be an intermetatarsal bursitis: a totally different thing that lives in almost the same spot and feels nearly identical. They're so easily mixed up that even the test we all reach for first can come back positive for either one. πŸ™ƒ

This is the kind of thing that's genuinely hard to sort out from the outside, which is the whole point: a proper look (sometimes with ultrasound) is how you actually tell them apart. Plus, they're not treated the same way.

If the ball of your foot has been grumbling, come, let's have a look.

Stress fractures, Achilles trouble, and shin splints are three of the most common things we see in runners.

The good news? They're all easier to manage when you catch them early.
Don't push through pain hoping it'll sort itself out. That's usually how a s turns into a proper injury.

Save this for the next time something starts grumbling, and come see us if it's hanging around. We'll help you stay on the road.

Dark lines on your nails?

A lot of people see a dark streak down their nail and assume it's a fungal infection. However it's more often something called melanonychia. It happens when the pigment cells in your nail get switched on and produce more colour. It's incredibly common and completely normal in people with darker skin tones, and it often runs in families. So, if your mum or gran has it, you might see it too.

For most people, it's purely aesthetic and not a health concern. That said, if you've noticed a new dark band, one that's changing or widening, or one that's only on a single nail, it's always worth getting it checked. Better to know than to wonder. Come see us if you'd like a closer look.

Your shoes might be quietly making your heel pain worse.

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common things we see: that sharp, first-step-in-the-morning heel pain. People ask us about shoes for it constantly, so here are three Dr. Diana often reaches for.

But here's the honest bit no shoe brand will tell you: no shoe fixes plantar fasciitis on its own. Stretching, strengthening and managing your load matter just as much. The right shoe simply gives your foot a little breathing room while you do the real work.

Save this for your next shoe shop.
But if it's not settling, let's tackle it properly together β€” that's what we're here for.

Sorry, but no.

We hate to be the bearer of bad foot news, but some of the "wisdom" floating around out there is quietly working against your feet. Here are a few foot myths we'd love to bust.

Wondering about your own? We're only a visit away.

Are your shoes doing more harm than good?

Many Australians wear the wrong shoes without realising it, and the wrong shoes are one of the most common causes of foot pain, bunions, heel pain, and ingrown toenails.

The good news? A few simple checks can make a huge difference:
- The twist test β€” good shoes bend at the toes, not the middle
- A thumb's width of room at the toe
- Firm heel support
- Shop in the afternoon (your feet swell!)
- Replace them before they go flat

But sometimes, even the right shoes aren't enough. If you've got recurring foot pain β€” or pain in your knees, hips or back β€” it might be time for a proper biomechanical assessment.

We'll look at how you move, how your shoes wear, and what's actually going to support you long-term.

5 things you probably didn't know about your feet

They're the hardest-working part of your body β€” carrying you thousands of steps a day, supporting your whole frame, and often showing the first signs that something else in your health needs attention.

As Socrates said β€” "When our feet hurt, we hurt all over." And he wasn't wrong.

So give your feet a little gratitude for everything they do. And if something's been bothering you β€” a sore heel, a dodgy toenail, or just something that feels off β€” this is your sign to get it looked at. Your feet will thank you.
