🚨Stay Protected This Winter: Free RSV Vaccines Available for Eligible Older Australians🚨

As we move through winter, respiratory illnesses become more common in our community. One virus that can have a significant impact on older adults is Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

While RSV often causes mild cold-like symptoms, it can lead to more serious illness in older people, including pneumonia and other respiratory complications that may require hospital care.

🔵Free RSV Vaccination Now Available🔵
Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), eligible Australians can receive an RSV vaccine free of charge.

You may be eligible if you are:
• 75 years and over, or
• An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person aged 60 years and over

🌟Why Get Vaccinated?🌟
Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to help protect yourself from serious RSV illness. It can help reduce the risk of:
✔ Severe RSV infection
✔ Hospitalisation
✔ Respiratory complications associated with RSV

🙌 We would like to thank our amazing Kangaroo Island community for sharing our recent posts and helping us to connect with the clinicians and networks that support healthcare on Kangaroo Island.

🩺 We are grateful to Dr Santosh Gorantla for providing GP Emergency Department services over the weekend and to Dr Angela Travis who is travelling to the Island to provide GP Anaesthetics services.

✈️ We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr Scott Lewis for flying his own aircraft to Kangaroo Island to support our community.

💙 During his time on the Island, Scott has provided both on-call coverage and clinic consultations, helping to ensure local patients could continue to access high-quality medical care close to home.

🤝 One of the great strengths of rural healthcare, is the network of skilled clinicians who generously contribute their expertise to communities like ours. We are incredibly grateful that Scott was able to be part of that network, bringing both his experience and commitment to the people of Kangaroo Island.

🏥 Community Update & Thank You

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who shared our recent locum opportunity and reached out with offers of support.

Following the unexpected cancellation of previously booked doctors, we are pleased to advise that coverage has now been secured for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

We are currently working through the credentialing process for clinicians who have expressed interest in supporting the remaining weekend dates and are optimistic that coverage will be finalised soon.

A special thank you also goes to our current doctors, who have been incredibly flexible and supportive in helping work around these unexpected gaps while we secure additional coverage. Their commitment to our patients and community is greatly appreciated.

The response from medical colleagues, professional networks and our local community has been overwhelming. It reflects the strength of the relationships we have built and the willingness of clinicians to support rural communities when the need arises.

Thank you again to everyone who shared, enquired, volunteered, or helped spread the word.

When stroke strikes, be a F.A.S.T. Hero.

This National Stroke Week, Australians are being encouraged to become F.A.S.T. Heroes by learning how to recognise the signs of stroke and acting quickly when every minute counts.

Knowing the F.A.S.T. signs could help save a life:

👉 Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
👉 Arms – Can they lift both arms?
👉 Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
👉 Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 immediately.

A stroke can happen to anyone, at any age, and every minute without treatment can result in the loss of millions of brain cells. Acting quickly can make a significant difference to recovery and outcomes.

📢 Community Update from KI Medical Clinic

Due to several unexpected last-minute locum doctor cancellations, we will be experiencing a shortage of available appointments and reduced on-call medical coverage next week.

Our team is working hard to minimise disruptions and ensure essential services continue. However, patients may notice longer wait times for routine appointments and limited availability across some services.

As a rural practice, we rely heavily on locum doctors to support both our clinic and after-hours commitments. Unfortunately, filling vacancies at short notice can be extremely challenging.

Reduced Medical Staff – Limited Appointment Availability

KI Medical Clinic will be very restricted on appointment accessibility this week and next, due to last minute emergency changes to the doctors availabilities and being unable to secure an additional locum service, meaning we are only operating with a limited number of medical staff on site. As a result, appointments will be extremely limited.

Please be patient with our staff as we try to navigate how to best serve our community

If your appointment is non-urgent, please consider rescheduling for a later date.

🚨In an emergency, call 000 or present to the Kangaroo Island Health Service immediately.
