🚨Stay Protected This Winter: Free RSV Vaccines Available for Eligible Older Australians🚨

As we move through winter, respiratory illnesses become more common in our community. One virus that can have a significant impact on older adults is Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).

While RSV often causes mild cold-like symptoms, it can lead to more serious illness in older people, including pneumonia and other respiratory complications that may require hospital care.

πŸ”΅Free RSV Vaccination Now AvailableπŸ”΅
Under the National Immunisation Program (NIP), eligible Australians can receive an RSV vaccine free of charge.

You may be eligible if you are:
β€’ 75 years and over, or
β€’ An Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person aged 60 years and over

🌟Why Get Vaccinated?🌟
Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to help protect yourself from serious RSV illness. It can help reduce the risk of:
βœ” Severe RSV infection
βœ” Hospitalisation
βœ” Respiratory complications associated with RSV

For many older adults, vaccination is an important step in maintaining health, independence and wellbeing throughout the colder months.

😷Looking After Your Health This Winter

Protecting yourself against RSV is another important way to support your health alongside annual flu vaccination and other recommended immunisations.

If you're eligible for a free RSV vaccine, now is a great time to have a conversation with your GP about whether it's right for you.

πŸ“…Book an Appointment

☎To discuss RSV vaccination or check your eligibility, contact KI Medical Clinic on 8553 2037 and book an appointment with your GP or Nurse today.

πŸ’™A HUGE thank you to Dr Scott Lewis!

✈️ We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Dr Scott Lewis for flying his own aircraft to Kangaroo Island to support our community.

πŸ’™ During his time on the Island, Scott has provided both on-call coverage and clinic consultations, helping to ensure local patients could continue to access high-quality medical care close to home.

🀝 One of the great strengths of rural healthcare, is the network of skilled clinicians who generously contribute their expertise to communities like ours. We are incredibly grateful that Scott was able to be part of that network, bringing both his experience and commitment to the people of Kangaroo Island.

πŸ’ͺ We would also like to thank our patients and the wider Kangaroo Island community for their on-going support. Strong rural healthcare is built on collaboration between clinicians, healthcare services, and the communities they serve, and we are fortunate to have such a supportive community behind us.

πŸ’™ Thank you to Dr Scott Lewis, for your professionalism, generosity, and dedication to rural healthcare. We greatly appreciate your support of Kangaroo Island πŸ’™

πŸ₯ Community Update & Thank You

We would like to sincerely thank everyone who shared our recent locum opportunity and reached out with offers of support.

Following the unexpected cancellation of previously booked doctors, we are pleased to advise that coverage has now been secured for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

We are currently working through the credentialing process for clinicians who have expressed interest in supporting the remaining weekend dates and are optimistic that coverage will be finalised soon.

A special thank you also goes to our current doctors, who have been incredibly flexible and supportive in helping work around these unexpected gaps while we secure additional coverage. Their commitment to our patients and community is greatly appreciated.

The response from medical colleagues, professional networks and our local community has been overwhelming. It reflects the strength of the relationships we have built and the willingness of clinicians to support rural communities when the need arises.

Thank you again to everyone who shared, enquired, volunteered, or helped spread the word.

Your support helps ensure continuity of healthcare services for the Kangaroo Island community. ❀️

🧠 National Stroke Week | 3–9 August 2026
When stroke strikes, be a F.A.S.T. Hero.

This National Stroke Week, Australians are being encouraged to become F.A.S.T. Heroes by learning how to recognise the signs of stroke and acting quickly when every minute counts.

Knowing the F.A.S.T. signs could help save a life:

πŸ‘‰ Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped?
πŸ‘‰ Arms – Can they lift both arms?
πŸ‘‰ Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you?
πŸ‘‰ Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 immediately.

A stroke can happen to anyone, at any age, and every minute without treatment can result in the loss of millions of brain cells. Acting quickly can make a significant difference to recovery and outcomes.

At Kangaroo Island Medical Clinic, we are committed to supporting our community through prevention, education and proactive healthcare. If you have concerns about your stroke risk factors, or it's time for a routine health check, our team is here to help.

πŸ“ž Call 08 8553 2037 to book an appointment with one of our GPs.

πŸ“’ Community Update from KI Medical Clinic

Due to several unexpected last-minute locum doctor cancellations, we will be experiencing a shortage of available appointments and reduced on-call medical coverage next week.

Our team is working hard to minimise disruptions and ensure essential services continue. However, patients may notice longer wait times for routine appointments and limited availability across some services.

As a rural practice, we rely heavily on locum doctors to support both our clinic and after-hours commitments. Unfortunately, filling vacancies at short notice can be extremely challenging.

πŸ’™ How our community can help

Kangaroo Island has an incredible network of healthcare professionals, connections, and supporters. If you know of any GP, Rural Generalist, Emergency Doctor, or Locum who may be available and interested in supporting KI Medical Clinic next week, we would greatly appreciate you reaching out or sharing this post.

If you have any contacts who may be able to assist, please contact:

We appreciate your patience, understanding, and ongoing support while we work through these unexpected staffing challenges. Our dedicated team remains committed to providing the best possible care to the Kangaroo Island community.

❀️ Thank you for supporting local healthcare on Kangaroo Island. Together, we can help ensure our community continues to have access to the medical services it needs.

❗️❗️NOTICE: Thursday 30th July - Friday 7th August 2026 ❗️❗️
Reduced Medical Staff – Limited Appointment Availability

KI Medical Clinic will be very restricted on appointment accessibility this week and next, due to last minute emergency changes to the doctors availabilities and being unable to secure an additional locum service, meaning we are only operating with a limited number of medical staff on site. As a result, appointments will be extremely limited.

Please be patient with our staff as we try to navigate how to best serve our community

If your appointment is non-urgent, please consider rescheduling for a later date.

🚨In an emergency, call 000 or present to the Kangaroo Island Health Service immediately.

Alternative care options on the island include:
β€’ Community Nursing Team (based at the Cook Centre)
8553 4231
β€’ Outreach locations: Parndana, Penneshaw, American River
β€’ Nurse Practitioner: Hamish
HealthDirect Helpline – available 24/7
1800 022 222
This free service is staffed by registered nurses who can advise you on whether you need to see a doctor or can manage your condition at home.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
