The human brain is incredible!

Every language is filled with an amazing amount of complexity and regularity to the point of defying description. There is not one single natural language that has been completely formalized at all levels of description in any way. Even English grammar, the ins and outs of which have been studied by thousands of people for centuries on end, has not been completely described.

You must, at some point, have wondered how many grammar rules you follow without even realizing it. The answer, plain and simple, is almost all of them. And how many are there? Thousands, or tens of thousands. These rules cover everything from word order and sentence structure to subtle constraints on pronouns, question formation, adjective order, and when certain constructions are acceptable.

As native speakers, we don't learn our language by memorizing grammar books. Instead, we acquire an intricate system of linguistic patterns simply through exposure during childhood.

For example, you instantly know that "great green dragon" sounds natural, while "green great dragon" doesn't, even if you've never been taught the rules governing adjective order.

You also know that "The dog chased the cat" means something very different from "The cat chased the dog," even though the words are exactly the same. Likewise, if someone says, "John told Peter that he was late," you instinctively use context to work out who he refers to, despite the sentence itself being ambiguous.

Or consider a sentence like "Is the man who is wearing a hat happy?" When turning it into a question, every native speaker knows to say "Is the man who is wearing a hat happy?"—not "Is the man who wearing a hat is happy?" We follow remarkably complex grammatical patterns without ever consciously learning them.

This distinction between implicit knowledge (what we unconsciously know) and explicit knowledge (what we can consciously explain) is one of the central insights of modern linguistics. In fact, many of the patterns native speakers use so naturally are complex enough that linguists are still working to fully describe them.

ADHD isn't just about behavior, it's visible in the brain, even in adulthood.

I came across a brain imaging study that stopped me mid-scroll: researchers scanned the brains of 72 young adults (half with ADHD, half without) and found that the regions tied to childhood ADHD symptoms hadn't just... normalized with age. They were still structurally different, years later. Less grey matter in the frontal and temporal lobes. White matter that hadn't matured the way it does in most brains. Disrupted wiring in the circuits that handle emotion, motivation, and attention.

Here's the part that got me: using nothing but these brain scans, researchers could correctly identify who had ADHD 83% of the time.
Not a checklist. Not a behavior chart. The brain itself.
